This kind of thing is what really scares me about having no insurance myself.

Are you sure he wasn't taking a picture of his camera? Seeing that this is the last time he'll see it before he pawns it for medical bills :) :) :) :)

    And be grateful
Here's a picture of my friend, Saboo, in the rehab unit of a local hospital, last year. He also crashed and had a spinal injury at Big Bear.

Be grateful for your health and don't take it for granted. Don't live scared, but don't be stupid and naive, either. Be aware that there are consequences and life could end or change drastically in less than a second.

It would be irresponsible for me not to give an update on Saboo, after posting this photo. After about a year and a half he can walk. He needs to use crutches most of the time and his left leg is pretty weak. But he's happy, grateful, and he just got an electric bike which he's terrorizing San Francisco on. He even rode a regular bike around a bit recently.

    So, are these photos art?

    :p

I can't tell you how many people I have looked after in my life time (I'm a trained Nurse for those who don't know, although don't anymore because of a back injury) who were in similar positons to both of these two young men. It is a shame when you see them like this, thinking of the circumstances that they were in when it happened. Insurance is a must in my opinion, but sometimes just can't be afforded by some people. Luckily, here in Australia we still have a National Health System, although wanting in some areas of care and after care as well, but Insurance doesn't neccessarily mean that you are going to get looked after well either.
