Canonet GIII QL17 and Ilford FP4+ in Rodinal

I met a guy on the rangefinder forum who develops film, and I just received my roll back from him today and he did a great job. The film's box speed was ISO 125 but I shot at ISO 80 and had it developed at box speed to bring out detail in the shadows. I really like how these came out so I'll probably be using this combination again.

These were scanned on my Epson 3170 which does a mediocre job. The negs are much nicer.

Me thinks I want to learn to develop b/w film too. :)

Oh, and I forgot to mention....say hi to the new addtion to my camera collection: a Canonet 28 in fine condition!!

And it only cost me the shipping!! This is the second Canonet 28 I've acquired for free, paying only shipping. The first one I gave to my daughter, now this one's for me. :)

Going to shoot a test roll of Tmax 400 soon once I get a new battery for it.

There's just a classic look with a film like that - and especially that developer - that I haven't seen duplicated in digital. Sigh...

Developing film isn't that hard, but you'll want to keep your chemistry fresh. If you're only going to do a roll now and then it's not worth it. If you shoot a fair amount, it's inexpensive and gives you the opportunity to start experimenting with different developers and techniques so you can get exactly the results you want. Also, the equipment is dirt cheap these days.

Great shots, Ray! I really like the horse but they're all good. I've never shot FP4, but I like Plus-X a lot.

You should definitely learn to develop you're own! It's a lot of fun and since it's cheap, you'll want to shoot more B&W. Don't worry about the chemistry going bad. If you mix one liter of each; D-76, fixer, and hypo-clear, it costs about $12, and you can develop 8 rolls of 35mm.

I have noticed something since I have been shooting my Bessa.
With my SLR, I normally shot with ASA 400 film( Tri-X), because it had those higher shutter speeds and all that.
But...
With an RF, the maximum shutter speed are a little slower, 1/2000 so I have been thinking of using a slower film..
Your thoughts?

With an RF, you can also hand hold at slower speeds.

Plus-X!!! If you like Tri-X, you'll like Plus-X. Although, I need to try some more Ilford films too.

I got my GIII QL-17 for the cost of a Holga.

It's smaller than the Bessa in width and thickness. The lens diameter is bigger than the 35PII, and it sticks out a little farther, but not much. Send me a PM if you want more details.

Brian, I knew this would interest you.

Yes, some RFs are known not to have faster shutter speeds. My Canonet, for example, only goes to 1/500. But it's not a problem using the sunny 16 rule. And even at slower speeds, like 1/15, you can still get a non-blurred image by holding the camera very steady or on a tripod. The first image you see up there was shot handheld at f/1.7 @ 1/15th.

Canonets are dirt cheap. Not because they're not good cameras (in fact they are underrated IMO), but because they were mass produced. I got my GIII for under $50 including shipping on Ebay. The two 28s were, as I said, free with only the cost of shipping.

Some have compared the GIII f/1.7 optics to the quality of a Leica. I'm not sure if that's true as I've never shot a Leica, but I do know I get great pictures from my little Canonet, which will never part from my hands, LOL.

You should check out the rangefinders forum more often, particularly since you are shooting with that new bessa. Lots of great info on film and developing there, and anything RF.

I check out RFF about as much as I do here, as well as APUG.
I am a die hard film photographer, so much so I am working, albeit slowly, a darkroom for my home.

You guys are killin' me... So a couple of clicks later I come across the new Bessa rangefinder with grid lines for a 21mm lens, no external finder needed. Ugh... If I make it thru this busy summer, maybe I'll have time to at least think about it again! :rolleyes:

It's one sweet little camera. If you watch e-bay a few days you can usally run across one fairly cheap.

I would agree about 99% with that statement...the exception would be the Leica M8, which comes closer than anything I've seen yet. Check these images out.

I'm afraid to... I can think of five thousand reasons it won't work for me! :) OK, I'll check it out. Didn't you have a Coolpix 5000? That camera always seemed about as close to a rangefinder as a digital P&S can get - still have mine.

Come on Steve, I know you want to get back to "that look", a lesser option would be a Bessa R2, 3 or 4 kit.

That R4A has me thinking... but also about the R4M. The M is more classic, no doubt about it, but I think the A might suit me better. And use of a 21mm lens and no external finder? Way cool. Bah, just money!

My film scanner is ancient. It's a SCSI device if you remember that. Jumping back into film means upgrading that because I really don't see a darkroom happening. I'll develop the film and then scan. I never minded developing the film and it's really not that time consuming. The time came with scanning and I think a new scanner might improve it to the point that I'd actually do it. Just being honest with myself...

I can certainly see an R4 in your future Steve.
Do what I did.
Sell your entire S2 kit, body, glass and all and buy that R4!
I got into an R2A kit with 25, 35 and 75 lenes for around $1600.
An R4 would be a bit more for the body, but depending on what or how many lenes you bought, you could be into an R4 kit for about that.
Add it all up and I think it's what you need to do for your photography!
I won't buy the camera for you, nor will I pay for any counseling you may need due to your soon to be RF affliction, but I will be there to help support it!
