CANON FT QL - Our Lady of Angels Cathedral

I purchased a very old Canon FT QL SLR on Ebay recently. I shot and posted color photos and now here are the first black and white shots.

    Film: KODAK TMAX 400

Glad to see you enjoying your new old Canon Eric!

I like the last one the best. And Tmax is a great film

    Hey Rick,

Doesn't this place look like a secret rebel base?

Ah, with a little imagination, yes I could see that. Not enough snow around though

Great exposure on all of these, Eric! So that is what TMax 400 looks like? Nice. Even the grain is somewhat fine for that speed film. Seeing these makes me anxious to develop my roll of Ilford PANF 50!

I used TMAX400 all the time when I shot weddings. It always provided acceptable levels of grain. My only concern was that these shot should've been overexposed based on my meter readings but black and white film is very tolerant.

I bought Ilford 400 b&w that is C41 compatible for my next project. The expense and wait time for getting these TMAX400 shots pushed my patience level. Next time I'll be able to develop the Ilford at any typical 1 hour photo place for much less. I just hope the quality is similar to the TMAX.

Glad you like the secret photos of the hidden rebel base off the 101 freeway in downtown Los Angeles.

Great camera - I've got one like that but haven't used it in a long time. I should drag it out, another member here (Schrackman) bought one recently too. I agree with Rick on that last shot - you don't have to get everything in the frame to have a good shot, and often - like here - it's better to leave things out.

Make sure to do a test run with that C41 b&w film before using it for anything important. I never used Ilford's version but loved Kodak's old T400CN. They've discontinued that and it's replacement, can't remember which one is current. Their Portra 400BW was the softer contrast version and T400CN had a great dramatic but grainless look to it. Excellent for scanning too. The only thing is that some labs don't print it very well (no prob with the negs) because the neg base isn't clear. Prints may have a color cast to them - if that's the case ask them to reprint, and if they won't do it find a better lab. Printed correctly, you'll be very impressed with these films if you like the Tmax 100/400 look.

Thanks AV! I appreciate the tips and info about the C41 B&W film. I'll probably shoot it this weekend among other things. We'll be going on a 4.5 day road trip starting Thursday night. I almost got the Kodak version but wanted to save a few cents since I didn't have a preference.

Schrackman got a Canonet btw....something I'm looking into since I've always wanted a rangefinder.

Yes drag out the old Canon! Never hurts to revisit old school photography.
