    canon/ lexar issue

this came via email to me from a bird photography group I belong to. Old news to me, but thought I'd pass it on

    Service bulletin from Canon:
Captured images on some 80x Lexar CompactFlash cards can be lost when
used with the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark II, EOS-1D Mark II, EOS 20D, EOS
Digital Rebel XT / EOS 350D Digital / EOS Kiss Digital N. Lexar and
Canon have investigated the cause and confirmed that the problem
occurs in extremely rare instances when the products above are used
    together.

Lexar require mailing in the CF card to receive a replacement. For the
    RMA visit:
    http://www.lexar.com/support/cust_advisory.html

You will need your proof of purchase to obtain the replacement. You
may mail in your card to Lexar to obtain the replacement, or to
receive the replacement before returning your card the charge is US
    $10.

What an asinine recall that is. Why would you need a proof of purchase; isn't the fact that it's the proper model good enough? I somehow don't think it costs them $10 to ship you a card either, what jackasses. I heard about this issue a while ago and have been buying sandisk ever since. Now I will definitely continue with those even if for no other reason than this stunt.

Nowhere that I found (with a quick glance at those links) did I see mention of the $10.

I cut and pasted from my email

Since I own a original 1D and lexar 40x cards that I have filled 500+ times with no problems, this info fall on deaf ears on my end ;)

Oops, in my haste I misread:

or to receive the replacement before returning your card the charge is US $10.
Thinking there was a $10 return shipping charge.

I have a couple 512 mb 80x cards and maybe I'm crazy but I could swear I lost images.

That's odd, you'd definately think those things would be tested exteremely well. What are the circumstances that cause it to self delete?

The RARE problem I heard about was trying to review your images while the camera was still writing to the card COULD make your camera/ card lose images. Letting the camera finish writing will solve the problem all together so I read. Reading something on the net doesn't mean it's true though ;)
