Bought myself a birthday present

Ordered the adapter and wide angle lens from B&H for my Nikon! I already have the telephoto which I couldn't use with out the adapter (you know, due to idiots who gave me the wrong one, then didn't even have the right one - from previous thread URK).

So there, i'm all set!

Hee. I love buying birthday presents for myself - I always know I'll like what I get! I'm bad though - I usually end up buying myself 2 or 3 presents each year.

Can't wait to see some pics with your new toys!

You do realize of course, that you're going to buy a lot of accessories, then decide that you REALLY need a DSLR. Then you're going to wonder why you bought all those accessories.

Playing devils advocate, like everyone does telling me that I NEED a DSLR. And I'll probably get one...one day. :-O

lol my father, of course, made a joke asking if i was getting a wide angle lens to take pictures of butts! lol I was like, well, actually, that WOULD be funny!

Happy Birthday, Janie! The accessory lenses for the Coolpix are pretty good - next you'll get the fisheye although I've only used mine a couple of times.

Speed, I'll play devil's advocate - the other way. Why do you need a DSLR? Truth is, you'll probably love it but you can do (as you already do) nice work with a Coolpix. A friend of mine - another photographer - and I are going kayaking for a week on Lake Superior at the end of the month. Since space is tight in the boats and we're going to be around water we both decided to shoot mostly film but I'm going to bring the Coolpix too. My film camera could probably survive a downpour better than my DSLR, won't have to worry about running out of memory cards, won't have to worry about dust, can do long exposures, the 20mm lens is really a wide angle on the 35mm, etc. All of these things make it better for this trip. I know you can delete images off of a card but I've heard it's not a good thing to do - download the card and then delete from there. I'd be out of card space when the trip is half over. Plus I've got film I need to use.

Most of the time I shoot digital, but I'm looking forward to shooting film on this trip.

You are correct my friend! I don't NEED a DSLR. Never seriously thought about getting one until the D70 came out. (What can I say, I'm impressed) But, if I could only buy one more camera, I'd get the F5. :-O

The advanced compacts (5400, 5700. 8700) are great little camera's. More compact than a SLR, with most of the features/controls. After working with the 3X zoom on the 3500 (37-111mm), shooting with the 5700's 8X zoom (35-280mm) is incredible. And I love being able to select flash, flash mode, aperture/shutter/manual priority, etc. I can understand why you'd carry one on your trip. Would I buy a 5700 for myself? Nope. I enjoy using the one I've got (it belongs to the office), but for that much money, I'd spend the extra and buy the D70.

But I'm not ready to go full time digital. If I ever get a D70 (or a follow on to it), I figure it will suppliment, not replace, my film cameras. When I go to the mountains, I've got slide film in my N80. When I shoot portraits, it's a good bet there's Porta 160NC in the camera. I really want a F5. That's what my heart is set on. If I had the money, I'd buyit today. And if I still had money after that, I'd buy a D70 as well.
