Any Netflix users out there?

So I was looking through the Documentaries available on Netflix this week and found a surprising amount of documentaries of different photographers. Watched "Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Impassioned Eye" a couple days ago and just watched "William Eggleston in the Real World" tonight. Both very different styles of photography but learning more about the photographers and seeing their work have proved to be quite motivating and have given me some shot ideas that may not have occurred to me before. Anyway, just thought I would pass this on for those Netflix members interested in learning more about various photographers or those looking for photographic motivation :)

We are Netflix users and I have watched a few photography documentaries. I attempted to watch War Photographer last night, but I just couldn't get into.

Here of a few of the ones I have watched, and enjoyed:

W. Eugene Smith: Photography Made Difficult
Masters of Photography: Andre Kertesz
American Photography: A Century of Images
National Geographic: The Photographers
Masters of Photography: Edward Steichen

I will have to add the two you mention to our queue.

I also use the documentaries as research for future photo trips. I have watched shows on Alaska and the Galapagos Islands with dreams of traveling there to photograph. I also watch documentaries on wildlife that I would like to photograph.

Thanks for letting me know about these. My girlfriend has a Netflix account but she's about to cancel it. Maybe I can talk her into keeping it for a little longer. Are any of these available to watch streaming over the net, or do you have to wait on the DVD?

I have netflix and never even thought about looking for photography documentaries. What a great suggestion. I'm going to add a few to my queue.

Paul, both of the ones I mentioned are available streaming. All the others I found on there seem to be dvd only though :(

Watched a VERY interesting documentary tonight. It was called "Black White + Gray". It's about Robert Mapplethorpe and Sam Wagstaff. While it did go quite a bit into Mapplethorpe and his influences, it also deals a lot with the art of the time and the blossoming of the photography market back in the day. This was a very interesting doc that I highly recommend. That said, keep in mind that it does kind of center around Mapplethorpe and if you're not familiar with his work, it is NOT for the faint of heart or those without an open mind.

Last night watched a couple "deeper" documentaries. The first was Born Into Brothels. It was about a documentarian photographer who moved into the red light district in Calcutta to shoot life there. The kids took a liking to her and were fascinated with photography so she ended up teaching a class. The other was "The Devil Comes On Horseback" which was the story of Brian Steidle's time in Darfur documenting the tragedies there. Both are must watch, though not with the kids.

I have heard about this show, but have never seen it. I will have to check to see if my local PBS station carries it.
