    Amazing tombstone
    Hi all

This is a tombstone I found in the graveyard of Winchester Cathedral. A lesson to be heeded!!! :D

I have cropped it so that you can read the sobering words!

    Cheers

Just to fill in a little background .. a "small beer" was indeed a low-alcohol ale, and a low quality one too, having been made quickly with poor quality ingredients. The phrase "small beer" still means something with no merit to it. On the other hand, "strong beer" was a mark of quality, as well as strength.

hollis .. in English of the period a small "s" in the middle of a word was written as "f".

A friend of mine is a certified beer geek, and he tells me that hops are the preservative in beer. This is why India Pale Ales are so "hoppy" - they had to last the voyage. Not sure if this is along the same lines, but I'm following Frog's advice just to be safe. :)
