After a few beers
Sitting around the campfire last night, I noticed some Northern lights. Grabbed this image, (took a few, but I like this one the best).
Canon 10D
17-40mm at 40mm F4
1min 27 sec
Iso 100

Cool colours and a very nice capture... but bizarrely, those little white dots (stars I'd imagine?) are distracting... and I'd be tempted to lose the huge border, it makes the image look somewhat 'diminutive' thus reducing its impact.
I am intrigued to see your other shots though...

Nice shot Hodgy. I think the stars and the foreground enhance it.
Here's why you could get that shot.
http://www.spaceweather.com/ Take a look at their gallery.
Looks like more auroras are possible tonight and tomorrow.

Very, very cool. Wish the image was larger, but from what I can see it's a very impressive photo. I would just love a chance to shoot northern lights! Thanks for sharing this, Hodgy.

It's funny how you say "noticed" some northern lights. Looks like it would be hard NOT to notice them! Great shot!!!

Chunk, will we be able to see them here in SW Wisconsin? What time of day are they usually visible?

When your sitting around a campfire with a wackload of people, in the middle of the bush, you don't normally look up. Only time I look up, is when nature calls, and that's when I looked up.
You will not see them during the day, but relatively late at night or early morning 12:30 - 2:30 am, this usually happens in a marginal change in temperature.

Incredible shot. On October 30, 2003 I was taking my sons trick-or-treating around my neighborhood in New Hampshire. I looked up and saw a beautiful redish tinge to the sky. At first I looked around for a spotlight then realize it was the northern lights. I'm a grow man and my eye misted up at the beauty. In this area, I might be lucky to see such an event once or twice in a lifetime. I ended up laying in the grass with my oldest boy and watched the light shift and move in delicate waves. Not waves you could track, but slow, deliberate waves.
Wherever you are -- consider yourself blessed!
