3K POST! You as a Photographer

Okay OT, you asked for it...here's my earliest picture of me AS a photographer. Shot just a tad over two years ago at Yosemite by Brian (Kokopeli). This photo is actually when I got that great shot of the golden glow on Half Dome.

BTW...them's some groooovy pants your wife is wearing in that second shot, hehe. It's funny when we look back at what we used to wear, isn't? One of these days I'll scan a picture of myself when I was a "rocker." Then you'll have something to laught at.

Oh John I was so excited when I saw this I thought sure you were going to say you were the one in the costume. That would have explained how you got such great acess to the players and field. Thanks for playing just what I was looking for.

When you hang out with photographers it's hard not to get your picture taken. We just have this need to snap away at everything. Most of the guys I know try to get you in some kind of funny pose of stupid position. Thus the second photo of Joy. This is a nice one makes you look like a serious phototgrapher. (And if I remember that Image of Half Dome right, you are.) Thanks for playing along Ray.

Hi all .. here's my little contribution to an excellent thread. Taken about 1975 in a mirror (scanned and reversed in 200!) The camera was my very first slr - a Mamiya MSX500. What I wouldn't do or pay to have that camera back again!

Wonderful image Mike. You may have read in another thread that I went on Ebay to duplicate my first SLR of the 60's. I found a Pentax H1a in great shape and it was cheap. I think it was worth it just to feel it in my hands again. The first picture in this thread was me with my Pentax. Thanks for playing along with us.

Come on guys I warned you if you didn't post more I'd be forced to post another. This one is from sometime in the early 80's. I think about 82 or so. We were on a photo-scenic weekend sponsored by a KY newspaper at Cumberland Lake in southeastern KY.

Yeah I love looking at these old photos when I had something to comb.

Well, here I am 10 years ago, and here's the photo I was setting up. I had to get my dad to search for the one of me, scan it, and email it. Both of these are scans of 4x6 prints, so the quality kinda stinks.

This is from a trip my dad and I took together, very close to my 19th b-day, right after my mom had her old Minolta X-370 repaired to give me as a gift. It's on Mt. Ranier in Washington. This is not only the oldest photo I could find of me as a photog, it's also one of the shots that got me hooked on photography.

Great Photo and story Paul. I think we can all trace our love for photography back to one or two incidents or experiences. This might be a great idea for another thread in the future. Many thanks to your dad for for going to the time and trouble to look this image up for you and to you for helping make this thread work. Oh by the way I just got my plane tickets for my Texas visit in Sept. I'll be a little west of you in Midland.

Here is a shot of me taken in 2000 at one of the trail heads in the Cloud Peak Wilderness Area in Wyoming's Big Horn National Forest. I'm the 2nd one in from the right. My Lowpro TLZ camera bag is strapped to my chest. I was interested in photography long before this trip, but this was my first major excursion with an SLR. I was still in P&S mode with it at this time, but did have the manual with me, and I did start to experiment a little on this trip.

We hiked a few miles into the wilderness area and set up camp. There was still lots of daylight left so I took my camera, and hit the trail to do some exploring. I saw some wonderfull things, but ended up overdoing it in the high elevation and got sick. Still not feeling well the next day, we headed back to the trailhead. The others were planning on going a different direction, and I decided to set up a base camp at the car because I didn't feel I could keep going.

After they left, I got bored real quick without having anyone to talk too. I had something to eat witch made me feel much better so I quickly packed up my stuff, and hit the trail. I was moving pretty fast in hopes of catching them. I made it to the lake that they were going to, but didn't see them anywhere. I set up my tent and went to sleep. That night a HUGE storm rolled thru, but my tent help up like a champ!! The next morning I packed it up, and took my time heading back to the car figuring that they were too far ahead of me to catch.

I took it easy for the next few days with some short, and some long dayhikes, and even drove into town to catch a movie (The Perfect Storm). Before I went to the movie tho I stopped at a store to pick up something to read. My magazine of choice was an issue of Popular Photography. That's when it all changed for me. I read the magazine from cover to cover, marveled at the images, and that's when I decided to learn more about photography. It didn't all happen at once tho. The price of film and developing kept me from experimenting and trying new things. Once I went digital and took a photo class at the local university, it all started to fall into place.

Oh, and the reason I didn't find my friends when I was hiking after them... They hiked a little ways down the trail, and then set up camp out of view of the trail, so I hiked right past them. Since in rained that night, they took their time getting going the next morning so their tents could dry out, and I hiked right past them once again on my way back to the car...

Through out this thread I have posted images of my various family members as photographers. I have not however had any of my boys both of whom are very good photographers in their own right. Here are Sam and Dave as they show off their skills with a camera. In the first group Sam was at the Horse Park taking pictures of a steeple chase race, with him is his wife Kate also getting in the action. The second pair of pictures feature Dave and my old Nikon F. He used it through out his college years even though it was nearly 30 years old at the time. He since has acquire an N80 and carries on the Nikon tradition.

Midland is only about 300 miles from Austin. You should swing by while you're in the area. :)

I'm glad I could participate in this thread. Thanks for getting it started. It's neat seeing all these old pictures. I've been really busy or else I would have dug up a few more. Maybe I'll find them later.

Ok one more but I sure would rather see you guys post some pictures of you with a camera in your hands. This is form the mid 80's at a local festival. I was playing cowboy this day. Had a the FM around my neck this day with the winder.

Since you asked so nicely Larry, here are a few more of me. These were taken by my wife-to-be last October in Da Porkies (Porcupine Mountain State Park, in Michigans UP). One of my favorite destinations. I let her play with the digital while I was shooting slides. Any yes, I am wearing chaps in the last one. This was our first overnite motorcycle trip together. Good thing I bought her her own bike, otherwise I wouldn't be able to take my camera equipment with me!!!

Ok Michael if you bought her a bike the least you can do is get her a digital of her own. I bought Joy a Nikkormat in 74 right after our first child was born. It was a great move for two reasons. She really got into photography (took a class at the local college) and it gave me a second body to use when she was not along on a photo outing. Looks like your w-t-b has what it takes. I love the third image (even with the chaps). I also love it when you can combine two loves like the bikes and photography, now you can throw in the w-t-b and you have a winning tri-fecta. Nice post Michael thanks for being a part of this thread.

Thanks OT. We do have another digicam (Kodak P&S), but Amy really isn't into photography so it spends most of it's time on a shelf. I think she was bored and just wanted something to do while she was waiting for me. :) I made sure she had some space on a memory card, set the DRebel to full auto and let her have at it.

Ahhh, but you bring up a good point. I bet she would love a new 1D Mkll N w/ a 600mm f/4 for her birthday this year!!! :)

Oh YES sounds like the perfect birthday present. And of course when she isn't using it......

Your at a great age to start building that portfolio. The coming years will afford you opportunities that you can't even imagine right now for wonderful image. Hang on to your love of photography it will serve you well in the coming years and decades of your life. I'm so glad that I started to take photographes when I was in college it has been a life long passion. Thanks for playing and post that other one as well.

i finally found the picture of me i was looking for. its the first picture of myself taking a picture i can remember. its from teh winter of 2004/2005 so nto to long ago. i had alreayd had my camera for a few months, but my sister snapped this on a hike during a warm spell ( it might have been on new years day).
