    News: Scientists develop flexible sensor

Though it seems to be only in the initial stages, I found this interesting:

Scientists develop flexible sensor to allow simple zoom

A simple approach to lens distortion, distort the imager.
I think one of my old cameras had that, a curved film back.

This goes a step closer to the mechanisms in the human eye.
Focussable lens, adjustable lens power (only bionic eyes have that) and matching curved imager like the retina.

Re: News: Scientists develop flexible sensor

"the team combined this with a simple, single-element lens constructed from a clear elastic membrane over a water chamber.

Pumping water into this chamber changes the shape of the lens and hence its magnification, and the sensor surface can then be adjusted to match the shape of the image surface it projects. "
like you said, closer to the human eye all the time.
