    2008 PMA Tradeshow!
The annual PMA tradeshow starts in a week! You may have noticed that product announcements have already started. Olympus, Pentax and Sony have already announced a whole bunch of new digital cameras.

    2008 PMA Tradeshow News & Announcements >>

PhotographyREVIEW.com will be at the show and I want to make sure we cover all the new gear you want to see. Walterick, Laurence Chen, SmartWombat, and I will be walking the floor, meeting with manufacturers, taking pictures, shooting video, and collecting literature and info on all the new cameras and other photo products at the show. If there's anything you guys want us to check out for you, make sure to let us know by posting your requests here. There are four of us so we should be able to cover it all.

John, I'm sure you'll check out the new Olympus 1030SW. The big thing I see is a 28mm equivalent in a pocket sized waterproof camera. I'm still using my 720SW because the three or four newer models that replaced it (in the past two years!) haven't seen like a real improvement. The 28mm thing alone almost makes it worth the upgrade, but I'm curious what you think of image quality of it versus the 720SW. I think the 1030SW is the P&S that a lot of people have been waiting for...

Yeah, I'm pretty excited about that one. I am loving my Canon PowerShot SD950 IS. But I wish it had a wider lens. And I also like the build of the Olympus Stylus SW cameras. My SD950 IS has already been exposed to a lot more moisture than it was intended to. Anyway, we will be checking the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW out for sure. We skipped a couple of generations as far as reviewing goes. It's time to review one again.

Most likely wishful thinking, but I would be curious about the Sigma DP1 high end point and shoot camera...I really do want a point and shoot and have been wanting to pull the trigger on a G9 but really want the sigma.

    PMA Videos
We started doing video coverage at last year's PMA tradeshow. We'll be doing it again this year and I was wondering if you guys had any video requests. Is there anything that you think would be particularly interesting for video? It could be product or even interviews. Let me know and we'll see what we can do :)

    Thanks-

I've updated the 2008 PMA Tradeshow coverage page with links to all the major manufacturer's press releases. And the announcements are still coming. So keep checking. There's now also a dedicated 2008 PMA section where we'll be posting our daily coverage. The daily coverage starts on Wednesday night and will include videos, articles, and tons of photos of new digital cameras and anything else new and interesting. Feel free to make requests. We've already got appointments for all of the obvious stuff - Nikon, Canon, Sony, Olympus, etc. But if you've got some special interest, please let us know.

No worries. Sorry for not listing Pentax in that post. We have an appointment with Pentax and they're listed on the PMA coverage page so their new camera and lens announcements are easy to find. Plus, Larry Chen, one of our PMA coverage crew, is a Pentax owner and wrote our Pentax K10D Pro Review. So we'll be getting some good Pentax coverage.

Will there be any "surprises" or have all the announcements been made pre-PMA? Just wondering if Canon has anything more - yes, I did read all the updates.

The announcements keep coming, Liz. Last night Nikon announced the D60, some new lenses and a bunch of Coolpix cameras. This morning I got a bacth of press releases from Tamron. I know there are more to come. But for Canon, my guess is they're all done. I think people who were expecting an EOS 5D replacement are going to have to wait for Photokina, in the fall.

    Sony Full-Frame Sensor
This is a big one - Sony just announced a 24-megapixel full-frame sensor. Not sure if there's a camera to go with it yet. But we'll learn more at the show. We do have a meeting with Sony.

Check out the new circular fisheye lens for 1.5x & 1.6x DLSR's from Sunex.

    http://www.superfisheye.com/

The sample images on their website look pretty cool. Looks like they come with a program to take your circular image, and make it into 360 panos and virtual tours with only 2 or 3 shots.

The question is will they actually bring it to production and internet rumors (take them for what they're worth) are that it is destined for the Japanese market only if they do. Not sure I would get one myself as it's not quite my cup of tea but, it is a very good sign.

Incredibly cool! I wouldn't have ever guessed this would happen, but Fuji has made some great MF rangefinders over the years. A friend had the 645 folder and it was really neat. Almost bought one myself a few years ago.

I can't believe somebody would say this these days:

    http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00OF7F

I feel it may be aimed at judging that interest in the potentially very huge Asian market, where at present digital equipment acquisition for quality reproduction may be out of the reach of many serious photographers (it is in the West, for many of us!)

South East Asia actually is pretty much the testing ground of many electronic gadgets.

Anyhow, kind of wonder if that has to do with the came-back of Fuji velvia 50. Probably not related :)

Hey Bri, here it is! In silver and black. The fuji reps had almost nothing to say about it. Apparently these handbuilt protoypes were there to gauge public interest, and according to their film rep interest was very high.

    Hi Javier,

Here's a pic of the Sigma DP1 with the optional optical viewfinder. I got to play with it a bit at the Sigma booth. 14mp and a DSLR-sized sensor are great, the most obvious compromise is the fixed 16mm lens...

Wow! This is the most exciting PMA in a while. A new Fuji 120 RF, new Holgas, and a compact digital for serious photographers. I've been wondering why nobody was putting biggers sensors in smaller digicams. I'll have to look into this one.

Rick, if you get a chance to talk to the Fuji people about that RF, tell them there is a lot of interest over here at PR.

Thanks for all the info and pictures!
