    Softbox Vs. Stripbox?
I'm trying to decide between gridded softboxes (24x24) and gridded stripboxes for my speedlites. Will be using be using mostly for rimlighting in a three-point lighting setup.

What would anyone recommend I do?

What are the benefits and disadvantages of either?

    Etc.

    Thanks.

We usually use Stripboxes for rimlighting. You get a more directed light source, less light splashing around. Plus as you are placing the lights behind the model there is less risk of having the box itself in the image.

The softbox is more versatile for normal lighting situations. Best to have both..

Thanks, Charles. I'm guessing the rimlighting would be softer with conventional softboxes?

Both would definitely be ideal, but for me, right now, it's one or the other.

Sure, if money is no object, why not have both? OTOH, it's fairly easy to "flag off" a regular softbox to make it a strip. Yes, takes up more room, but lets you do more with less specialized equipment. As for the rim effect, IMO the light from either would be basically the same...
