I found this clothes rack on sale at Canadian Tire for 9.99$ reduced from $30. The poles are metal and can be raised or lowered, and the cross bar has extending inserts for the end so I can go a bit wider if necessary.

I hung a shower curtain liner using regular hooks.
The base is quite steady with two lateral bars. My only complaint is that I didn't get two - this was the last one at the store :D
