Old School...I have no idea what i am doing!

Help! I just got into the digital world and am having some problems. I have 2 slaves and set them up today and was using my Sekonic L-308B (yes B!, it's old) to check settings and popped off the flash (sun pak 120J) with the slaves and adjusted my D300s to the settings on the flash meter and the pictures were extremely overexposed. Have there been updates to the light meters, do I just need a new one that is specific to the "digital world"? I am confused why my "old school" stuff is not working in the digital world...seems like I need everything new and I have only been out of it for about 5 years! Help!

Perhaps I'm a little confused by your teminology...

Set the light meter to flash, enter the iso/sync speed and use the meter to trigger the flashes for a reading.

Yes, that's what I did and for some reason the readings I entered into the camera did not produce good results. Everything was extremely washed out.

Hmmm, okay, just so I don't make any assumptions.. you are shooting in manual at your camera's sync speed and lowest iso ?

What are the lighting conditions ? Inside ? Outside ? Are you taking the reading while holding the meter right beside the main subject ?

Does the meter have a retractable sphere ? I"m not familiar with that model...

Was shooting at 200 ISO
Inside, taking reading right next to subject.
Its the 2000 version of the Sekonic L308S and it does have a retractable sphere.

Where you in manual mode on the camera? Was the sphere exposed ?

Try the manual if all else fails :)

Don't know what camera you're using but the Fujis have an "auto ISO" feature that if left on, will override the ISO settings, even in manual mode - might be worth checking whether your camera has this feature, if so disable it in the setup menu.
