peanut slave for sb-600 ??

I am looking to get a peanut slave for my sb-600 .. I was told I need the wein digital peanut slave ... from what I see at B&H I will also need a sync adapter for it ..

is there any particular one I need to get ?? I am told that voltage becomes an issue when dealing with the speedlights ... I don't want to fry my speedlight by using the wrong equipment ...

I am looking to use it for lighting the background

You won't fry your speedlight.

The only thing that can get damaged is what is attached to the flash itself.

The flash is the thing that is producing incredible amounts of voltage (300V+) to fire the flash bulb. It is stored in a large capacitor in the flash head and when the flash trigger gets shorted (by the camera or peanut slave) the voltage in the capacitor gets released through the flash bulb. Some of this voltage can be felt on the contacts of the flash. Some flashes can have the full 300V some only 5V some somewhere in between.

It is "this" voltage that can damage other equipment if that equipment does not have a protection circuit designed to protect against it.

So don't worry about your flash it will be fine and peanut slaves are designed to handle the high voltage, otherwise what good would they be?

Now I have heard of some flashes (not sure which ones) that do not work well with slaves, whether optical (peanut type) or wireless (cheaper ebay or pocket wizards), so that may have some affect on what slave you might need to buy.

I really appreciate the response Tim ... I did some searching last night and found a forum that had a few discussions on this topic and the Hama hot-shoe slave kept coming up as being used with the sb-600 ..

I really have no idea if that's what your looking for.

Do you have a camera store near by? A Ritz at the mall or what have you?

Bring your SB-600 and another flash to fire it with and try out some optical slaves.

most should work with most flashes, but I know there is a problem with a few certain flashes but I can't remember which ones.

Have you checked strobist.com or strobist group on flickr? I think that's where I saw the info on incompatibel flashes (had to do with pocket wizards tho).

i use a small adapter for my 430ex that i got off ebay for about 5 dollars. you can plug either a radio slave or miniplug into it. works pretty well, i must say.

New guy here, I have been looking up the same subject so I have read all threads in this discussion. I am also a Nikon D50, two lenses and SB-600. Which was supposed to fire remotely, but according to Nikon never will. So the store I purchased from will sell me a synch cable at cost, or the radio trigger they have for $129 will set me up for future studio lighting. My remaining question is will the Wein peanut pick up the preflashes and or the infrared focus assist flashes? Or will I have to always use the on-board pop-up flash? Which I can always dim down with diffusers to soften the front fill light, (errr) in most circumstances.

I got a peanut slave but as you are concerned about having to use the on-board flash I went another way. I got a cheapo wireless set up found here http://cgi.ebay.com/4-Channel-Radio-...QQcmdZViewItem

If you read farther down in the description he also sells the hot shoe adapter to plug in the receiver. You have to email him for details - it isn't that expensive and works very well. I still use the same wireless set up today with my sb-600 and my 2 alien bee 400's.

THANKS, That makes things easy (easier). So either way will work. Will the radio trigger allow using the popup for front fill?

no it will not - it is too wide for the pop-up to come up.

a reflector and the sb-600 wireless could give you some pleasing results too ... The wireless system works well though ....
