    Dumb tripod question..
Okay, my worthless (1962) tripod needs to be replaced. I have a very nice, lever-operated,
ball head that I use on my monopod. I would like to purchase a set of tripod legs, like
the Silk 700DX, and use my ball head on it. However, there appears to be a problem.
With my expensive Italian ball head mounted on one of these newer tripod leg sets, how do you get to 'portrait' orientation? Am I missing something? Or should a get one of the
'old style' flip-up heads with the tripod? I don't think my ball head is jointed, so that, it
can swing 90 degrees. I'll take a look at it tonight. But if anyone uses a ball head on a
    tripod, please 'chime in'.
    edit below:
--->I told you this was a 'dumb question'. I just looked at a picture of my 100 dollar ball-head,
and it does have two slots for vertical set-ups..<

Nah, not a dumb question. Sometimes different ways of using gear are obvious, sometimes they're not. As you found out, ball heads are set up to be able to move the camera to a vertical postion, but a lot of times you have to fiddle (industry term) with the dang thing to get it to do that...
