Backdrops

I am new to photography and I need a setup for a Studio. Can anyone point me in the right direction to purchase Backdrops? I am almost done with choosing my lighting
(alienbees B800's).

Now I just need to narrow down some good Backdrops that are reasonable priced. Any help would be appreciated,.

Amvona is one of the better budget backdrop retailers. From the home page click on the marketplace tab, the use the backgrounds pull-down menu...

I have never ordered from them, but others on the forum have had good things to say about them.

I just purchased a Thunder Gray & Chroma Green backdrop, along with a backdrop stand from Amvona. The stand is not bad, is very portable, has a nice carry bag to go wtih it, but it is not all that heavy duty. It will withstand what I intend to put it through, however.

The two backdrops are both 10x16, well made with grommets and all but I noticed that they are somewhat sheer. In other words, very thin material. I have to put a homemade black backdrop behind them to keep any ambient light from peeking through.

Considering that I am a budget-minded photographer and got everything for under two hundred bucks, I am pleased with the purchase. Now all I have to do is start taking some portraits. :)

schrackman - I ordered the pure Black and pure White muslim from Amvona and I felt the same way as you stated, that they are soo shear that the ambient light shows thru.

Help from anyone:

Is this common for all muslim material or is there better muslim material out there or is it possible that we received a bad lot from Amvona?

Well, plain muslin is translucent. If you have black and white, they're most likely dyed, which wouldn't affect the opacity much. So I guess what I'm saying is that what you have sounds normal...

If you really want an opaque black or white background, you should use something other than dyed muslin. Rolled paper or black velvet are much better.

Or of course, painted muslin. Most more costly pro backdrops are mottled muslin that is painted, not dyed. The paint adds a weight and thickness that makes the material much more opaque.

Of course, these types are usually in colors. For the cost of a painted white muslin, you could buy a lot of rolled paper...
