Well, plain muslin is translucent. If you have black and white, they're most likely dyed, which wouldn't affect the opacity much. So I guess what I'm saying is that what you have sounds normal...
If you really want an opaque black or white background, you should use something other than dyed muslin. Rolled paper or black velvet are much better.
Or of course, painted muslin. Most more costly pro backdrops are mottled muslin that is painted, not dyed. The paint adds a weight and thickness that makes the material much more opaque.
Of course, these types are usually in colors. For the cost of a painted white muslin, you could buy a lot of rolled paper...
