    Alienbee 800&umbrella

    hello everyone, I'm thinking about getting an B800 but don't know what size softbox to get. small, medium, or even large octagon. I'm going to take picture of my wife and two little one. thanks ahead to anyone would help...

    Welcome to the site, JT...

    A medium (medium being a relative term, my Calumet is 30"x40") soft box throws a lot of light over a fairly wide area, depending on how it's positioned. This is certainly adequate for small or medium group portraits...

    The larger soft boxes can be quite cumbersome, and may actually be more trouble than they're worth, unless you have a very large shooting space.

    Hey Steve, what kind of coverage do you get with a 48" Octobox type set up? I get the degrees thing, what about real life group size and working distance? I'd be shooting a B1600 through it.

    Never used one. I hardly shoot more than two folks at once, unless it's a band or something. And for that I almost always use large umbrellas...
