One single hockey goalie shot

Just got home from working all weekend, took me 3.5 hours to make the 1.5 hr drive because of snow...just figured I'd post this one shot....this is one of those shots that makes you happy about what you do...

Outstanding shot. Looks like you're using flash to get those kind of colors and stopped action. How do you have your flash(es) positioned and how are you triggering them?

Did you take this from the player's bench area?

Really great "catch" Brent! I have never shot hockey, but I can imagine that at the speed the puck moves it is a rare occasion to get a good shot of the it much less one like this. Great shot.

yes, this was taken from the player's area, on the end of the bench closest to the goal. We shoot using 6 white lightning strobes all along the upper edge of the rink on the bench side, all hardwired to Pocketwizards. This was at ISO 100, f/3.5, 1/250, 5600 K white balance.

yep, it's kinda like baseball in that aspect. The puck moves so fast through the frame that it's hard to capture it. But the harder thing is in fact trying to capture your subject without anyone getting in the way, especially at the level where the players start to get bigger. I think probably 1/3 of my shots had someone skate right between me and my subject. you have the picture framed and go to shoot, then when your camera comes back from blackout, you see someone moving quickly out of the frame, and realize your picture just got ruined.

Two more great shots....love the face in the second one....both are really sharp with good color.....

That is just a great shot! It's that 300-yard drive or when you stick that 150-yard shot within 2 foot on th e18th hole! The one that makes you want to come back ASAP!

As an ex-goalie, coach and semi-athlete, I love the shot of the keepers eyes exactly-and-spot on the puck! So many times you see the eyes somewhere else, or just behind. This is a remarkable catch.

Exceptional timing on the first one. Looks like it is right off an SI cover. Love your framing and timing on the second as well.

I know this was not even close to your "moment," but I was pretty proud of this one considering that most of my hockey shots are down right ICKY!
