    Hockey photos

    Hi,

Thought I'd join in and see if I can get some insight into some better shots at the rink.

I've attached a shot from a recent game shot with my Canon 20D, 70-200f2.8L zoom at ISO 3200, 1/500 and this particular shot was at f3.2

Thoughts, suggestions or comments on how to improve in this challenging available light environment?

    Thanks

I think a little looser crop would help. It would give the player a little room to "move" into.

Color looks like it is a little blue, but that can be easily fixed. It looks like you got enough SS to freeze the action, and the photo looks sharp. It looks really good for being at 3200 ISO actually.

I gotta go out and shoot some hockey. I've been lazy the past few months

Thanks for the input. I still need to work on that white balance problem. I've tried other ISO/SS/f-stop combinations and it seems that this is the best one I've found.

    I appreciate your comments

You could do a custom white balance off of the ice to help with that problem.

    Re: Hockey photos

I am a rookie also. The single biggest tip I have gotten here is to overexpose the photo by one step or so. Auto Levels in PS have helped me, but as of late I get the opinion they take it to a step too bright. The custom white balance I have tried, to be honest, with not good results. I think maybe there can be too much of a variable between the white of the ice and the white of the lights. I want to try it with a white sheet of paper on the Ice sometime, I will post up my results. Keep shootin.
