Just an FYI for the month of May

This month is turning into a VERY busy month. At this point I will have just two days off, and many days I'll have 2 or 3 jobs to shoot. Tomorrow will be one of those days, from softball in the morning to a shoot at the local airport and then at a HS alumni dinner. Anyway I won't be available much this month with this crazy schedual. If you need to get ahold of me I'll be checking in quick each day and will respond to PM's and so on but it will probably be late as I have to get the photos sent out first.
    Thanks!

Re: Just an FYI for the month of May

Well, I'm finally back online - I guess that's good timing.
I have lost the desktop machine, the compaq laptop, the new Vista desktop, and I'm rebuilding the dead desktop as an emergency measure.
So for how long I can't tell ... I'm back online.

    Old desktop:
    - failed to boot with registry error on SOFTWARE
    - recovery console said "failed to enumerate folders" so the drive C is toast
    Old laptop:
    - failed to boot with registry error on SYSTEM
    - didn't even bother with recovery console
    New desktop:
    - crashed several times daily
    - either Vista or the hardware
    - eventually HD died totally
    - sent back for refund
    Old desktop
... rebuilding it with reformatted drives

It's only the C: drive that dies.
    Always with registry failures.
So there is a disk error on shutting down that kills the operating system about once every 6 months.

    Defenestration is always an option.

wow, thats not good. are these drives getting too much hot air, almost sounds like they are too close to a heat souce. I now have all my extra dives on extenal units so I can swap them as needed and fortunately have not had any failures since.

Correct, the built in drives had no airflow.
The system is built on the cheap I suspect.
There was NO case fan, only a 2" fan in the PSU - barely a breath of hot air got out.

So last summer I went at it with a few spare parts.
Now there is a 4" fan at the rear, which does the job for ordinary weather.

All my backup drives are external.
Now I have a 2 terabyte NAS on the house LAN.
So I'm moving images off the USB drives onto the RAID 5 NAS.

Ouch! I have 3 fans I added to my desktop as well as drilling additional air holes. My problem now is dust and I have to take it outside every 2 months and blow it all out. I also have been adding aluminum heat sinks and fans to each of my 6 external hard drives. So far it seems to have helped though.

Ouch! That kinda hurts. At least you had your images backed up.

I just dropped $1700 for a new Thinkpad since I'm giving my old one to my girlfriend.
