Hockey - first game in two years

I shot a an Indiana Ice game tonight, first in two years and it was a blast. The Ice won in OT 6-5. There was plenty of action in this one!

    #1 Fight #3
    #2 Winning goal
    #3 A save
    #4 Fight #1

2 more shots from the game - all were taken with the 28-300 which worked rather well.

Re: Hockey - first game in two years

    the first shot's your best.

#1: good actionl although very flat. Needs a levels correction, and a bit of contrast and saturation to bring out the color in the jerseys. My guess is that you were shooting into glass.
#2: unless someone knows why this shot is important it is not good material. The main focus should be the shooter, since he is the one who scored, but he's blurred and the goalie is in focus w/ his head turned away. Good just to show the winning goal, but not much else.
#3: no. motion blur, and either just blur or way too much cropping done.
#4: another good fight shot, still seems too flat. try playing wtih the saturation on this one, and also running through neat image.
#5: again, not sharp. Either OOF or motion blur. Tried to salvage with USM looks like, but it is beyond repairable.
#6: would be good if it were just the goalie. The two other players add nothing. I don't like the composition, with the goalie's stick cut off. Also, the BG is distracting, and doesn't really add anything, it actually takes away, since no one seems to be watching the game.

JS - You seem a little rusty. :P JK. You have a few good ones here.

I like the first one. Like Livin said, it is probably your best. To put it mildly, it just pops out at you. For some reason, I like the second one. The players in the foreground are a little distracting, but the goalie's positioning and where the puck is make for a great image. The focus doesn't always have to be on the shooter, especially for shots like this.

Can't say I like the third one except for the fact that the goalie is in a pretty good butterfly. It looks like it is cropped way too much. The next two images I'm not a fan of, either they are too noisy or too blurry. You weren't shooting through glass, were you?

Although the last one is a little flat, I really like the action in it. You should call this the "Perils of being a Defenseman." The goalie action in the background adds to the image, in my opinion, but I don't think many would agree with me.

You've got a lot of noise in these, and blur too.
What were you shooting at, ISO800?, and what with?
I'm interested in comparisons between the 20D and the 1DmkIIN

Ummm these had no PP and were not put up for critique....anyway...

#1; ISO was either 1600 or 3200 depending on where I was
#2: At this place you have no choice but to shoot through the glass, unless you have a 600mm lens and shoot from the nose bleed section. (I actually considered doing this)
#3: The glass is so bad you loose from 1 - 3 stops! I wish they'd replace the glass

Sorry Liven, no offence taken, I just threw them up quick as I was tired, haven't slept well lately due to pain in the shoulder and other things. Anyway, heres a couple others I did take time to play with (well, a couple minutes )
I really like the ice flying and the wipeout but the crash at the end was a bit painfull and he got up slowly. I know the feeling, I injured both knees at once in a similar collision and my knees were never the same.

Whoa - that first one's color cast is way odd - I hope they're not actually wearing lavendar on the ice. I tweaked it a little. Hope you don't mind.

Thats really weird, it didn't look that way when I did it here....not sure how that happened. I also see the yellow is too green....hmmm, I wonder if my video card is giving out? Not the monitor, I have dual monitor setup and they look identical on both computers...

Sorry, JS. I didn't mean to critique them. I was just saying what I liked and didn't like about them.

No biggy.....I do wish they would get new glass though, some of it is so old it's smoke colored from age.... There you probably lose 4 steps...
