    Football with Canon 7D
I just picked this camera up as a backup and wanted to try it out tonight. Just pulled it out of the box, got the batteries charged up and ran to the game to give it a whirl. Shot with a Canon 70-200 2.8L and no flash. I had no clue as to where to put the settings, custom functions, etc., so I asked my son who uses a 7D quite a bit and he had me put it at ISO 3200 with a manual setting of f2.8 at 1/640. As it got darker I raised the ISO up to 5000 and kept the f stop and shutter speed pretty much the same but tweeked them a few times. I was very impressed with the snaps I got and could not believe I was shooting at ISOs between 3200 and 5000. Could you image film with that ISO? The silver hallide crystals would be so thin the film would almost not exist.

I have the 7D as well and just received my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 lens yesterday afternoon then I went and shot a HS Varsity game last night. Your photos are amazing compared to mine. I still have no idea what I am doing. :o

That last photo is good, exposure spot on (manual I assume) and caught great action.
Is he allowed to be pulling the catcher's head off?
That looks close to a foul, I'm sure you're not meant to grab the mask on front of the helmet and pull.

Is your 70-200 2.8 the IS version? I mostly will be taking Mountain bike pictures and still dont know what lens to buy either thr 70-200 F4 IS or the 2.8 (non IS version) what would you suggest?

Did u use a tripop for those football pictures?

    thanks

My 70-200 2.8L is several years old and it does not have IS and I really don't think it's necessary as I try to obtain a shutter speed that is going to be sufficient enough where I don't need the stop or two IS offers.

I don't use a tripod when I shoot sports as it gets in the way and secondly, they are unsafe as they are difficult to move quickly and can hurt a player, fan or more importantly, me!

I'd get the 2.8 as the extra stop is worth it for both extra light and the sweet bokeh you get a 2.8. It costs more but it'll be worth it in the long run.
