    First Softball Of Season

I hadn't shot any of the D2 Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs fastpitch team before.. but it was 70 degrees today so I headed out to shoot the doubleheader.. the first time EVER that they've played at home in March. All shots were through the fence... not a photo hole in the fence anywhere and not a lot of access otherwise (the baseball field is even worse for shooting.)

The 70-200 is plenty long for the limited access I had to shoot, and should be pretty good at our high school field (and cc) fields where there are much better shooting positions, but I'll still need the extra 80 mm added with a 1.4 for baseball. A little rusty, and could be better if not through the fence but I missed the sounds of bat on ball, though I love watching/shooting hockey. Pretty much an overcast day but off and on brightness caused a few problems I was happy to deal with since it's natural light.

Second of two home runs in the second game by the 'designated player' .. her first and second career home runs and she's a junior. Would have been a really good shot if not for the fence

Got lucky on the only time I attempted to shoot a fielder making a play.. was able to keep focus for this one.

Your pictures are great. I just joined tonight. My daughter plays softball, love taking pictures, but need some help!! Trying to improve my skills so I stumbled onto this site and your pictures. Very frustrated with my pictures...I can not seem to get the ball froze. What settings are you using on your camera

As I mentioned.. the shutter speed was 1/3200 on some and even 1/4000 on others.. that was me being rusty and having it at ISO 640 with the heavy overcast ..and some sun poking through also.

Great shots. Ya that's tough light to work in. The third shot is nice, the players watching in the background is a good story telling moment. I would have liked to see the ball more in frame, but I think it still works because I pay more attention to there faces.

I'll have more ball in frame in other shots/games.. but this was hard with the fence and framing..
