First Shoot with Canon 40D and new lense

Okay...it was a challenge, but I got some shots to share...

Like I said before....the gym was DARK....so I shot at 1600 and still had to do a lot of editing on these....still not overly happy with them....

Shot a game today....which turned out better...but will post those pics tomorrow....

Let me know what I could have done differently....

    Thanks everyone...

I'm no sports photographer, but IMO, these are great. You may have under compensated by 1/3 , but otherwise, I don't see how they could be any better.

I think these are great shots! The last one with all the younger boys around the ball is wonderful! For a dark gym I think you did a very nice job on the other ones. Do you have a son playing?

The only thing that could make the shot of battle for the ball is at least one face, but we get what were dealt !

Well yeah skydiver, I am connected to all 3 teams this year.....The JJV team my husband coaches.....the JV team my son plays on and my husband coaches....and the Varsity team my nephew plays on....so we stay really busy....my daughter starts playing on the Parks and Rec team next week....

I know what you are saying JS.....and I have only looked at a couple of pictures from that game...my mission today is to finish going through those, hopefully I will find what a call the "Shot of the night". You know what I mean....the one shot out of the 200+ shot that you say...yep..this is the one....LOL

    Thanks again guys.....
I hope I am showing improvement...that is my goal....

    Now that's scary!

bfiredup, I'm really impressed with your photos. I've been wanting to try my hand at basketball. You've inspired me.

Glad you are getting into your new equipment too.

You sound like me a few years ago BFiredup! I had 2 sons and a daughter all playing and when they were in middle school sometimes they'd be on 3 different teams at a time (school, travel & rec) and my husband and I ran and coached the rec league for many years. Now my 2 boys are in college (just playing intramurals) so we only have my daughter left. She's a junior and a captain on varsity. I only got into taking photos last year and got talked into putting together a year end slideshow. Now I'm the unofficial team photographer for soccer and basketball. Thanks to online help I've come a long way in a year but still have far to go. I really wish I had started years ago so I could have gotten photos of my sons.

Re: First Shoot with Canon 40D and new lense

Skydiver, I know how you feel, and I am glad that I am learning this now, before they leave home...it is a hactic lifestyle, but we love it....(except for the burn out times..LOL) But now that I am doing the photo thing, I seem to be more a part of the game, instead of the Mom that is cheering for me....

Everyone is getting used to seeing me all over the floor...anywhere from under the basket to behind the team area snapping away....the boys and girls don't even really see me anymore, which I tell them that is a good thing...that they need to do their job, and forget I am around.....so I am getting the blend factor down....LOL...expect for the refs...some always seem to find a way to get right in the pic...but others make a real effort to stand to the side...which is great....

Keep on shooting, and I will do the same....

Re: First Shoot with Canon 40D and new lense

I just found this website today and I love it! I have been shooting basketball for my boys for a couple of years and am struggling. Today I shot with shutter speed at 125, ISO 3200 I used my 24-70 2.8 lens and my 40 D. I think my metering is wrong or off- they aren't focusing right. Any pointers out there? I see that I am replying to a question already submitted, but you all seem to know what you are talking about...

You might get some good responses here, but you probably would be better off starting a new thread with some example images. - Terry
