    Olympics Photography

    Hi all,

I'm going to be at the Olympics at Beijing. I was wondering if anybody had first-had knowledge or experience with (amateur) photography at the 2008 or any other Olympic Games. I have heard rumors of some rather restrictive policies being considered, such as banning outright all SLR cameras for non-press. This would be rather disappointing to me, since I'm currently using a Canon Rebel XTi (400D) and just got the new 55-250mm IS zoom lens for it especially for the Olympics. Please write back if you have any info at all.

    Thanks in advance,
    Eugene

    Re: Olympics Photography

I have no idea, but recalling the Atlanta 1996 games, you'd have a pretty tough time getting anything decent w/o a press pass. If you're at an outdoor event, that lens should be fine - if you can get close enough. Indoors, it'll be too dark. Since you'll be going to Communist China, I imagine they will be pretty restrictive with who can do what. Nonetheless, an outright ban on SLRs seems a little bit extreme to me.

I don't even know where to tell you to try to find out... maybe whomever's selling tickets, or perhaps a tourism company or group would know?

I would have to prob say good luck to you. I've never done it but I know a lot of TV people that have been. Being in China I figure things will be a lot tighter than they are state side.
