Have you been formatting the card in the camera or just deleting all the photos? I format my memory cards after every shoot. First I transfer the images to my computer. After I remove the card from the computer and confirm that the image files have transferred successfully, I put the card back in the camera and use the "Format" option in the menu to delete all files and start fresh. That should take care of any empty, unused folders for you.

By the way, this isn't a technique specific to your camera. I haven't used the Sony DSC-500. But I do this with all digital cameras and recommend everyone do the same. You may have to search through the menu or manual to find the "Format" option, but I guarantee it's there. Doing it this way also ensures that whenever you go to take pictures, your memory card will be clear and ready to shoot.

Mine did that when my battery was shot. Andy is right, replacing the battery should work.

Hi, I just bought a sony cybershot dsc s500. For its memory stick, I bought a 512MB Pro Duo. At first there was no problem, however after some usage, I get a FORMAT ERROR with the memory stick logo flashing when I power on the camera. What I did to temporarily resolve it was reseating the memory stick. This however did not fix the problem as it still occurs intermitently. Worst is that, now I get a FILE ERROR (intermitently occuring) too, when reviewing a shot made - the picture is not recorded. I am doubting if the stick in not compatible, but then I checked a sony site and it is compatible. Did anyone encountered a similar problem? Hope to hear from you guys....Many thanks in advance

I also have this type of problem. I am using Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo 2 GB (Magic Cat). I am not able to format the memory stick. While I attempt, I see the message "Format Error". I contacted the Sony Service Personnel, they said that only Sony Memory Stick Duo is compatible.

Hi, I've had my camera for only two monthes, and it worked awesome. I haven't changed the memory card or anything, but I took some pictures outside in the snow and transferred them to my computer. The next time I turned on the camera a blue screen came up over every one of those pictures saying file error. It let me take more pictures, but when I try to put them on my computer (using USB cord) a red ex comes up and each picture says it's downloading and never does. What can I do????

I was having the same problem with my 4GB memory stick pro duo, when i took more than 50 pictures with my camera (dsc-w90) i would get the blue screen with the file error message. I'm guessing you guys bought the memory stick on ebay right? I bought mines there and it turns out it's a fake one. If you also bought it there then you most likely have a fake memory stick because I found out that most of the memory sticks sold on ebay are fake, to help you figure out if you have a fake one or not check out this guide or google fake memory stick pro duo.

    Re: Sony DSC-S500 Cybershot help
I think I solve the problem wih my sony camera.
After readin almost all posts on this problem I lost hope to save my photos from that "Format error" stick. So first I start to format the memory with the camera, after 5-6 minutes it says everything is formated. I restarted the camera but again there was a memory error message, but this time the blue screen has gone and I can see where lens are pinting. After that i start the format function again on my camera, but after a few seconds (just at the moment when it starts to format) i took put the batteries. When I put the batteries again the memory stick pro duo was empty. So I downloaded a program for memory restore (Rescover my Photos) Here is a link with program with C.. R... A.. C... K... http://www.2baksa.net/news/27705/
So that program found all the pictures and the movies that were on that stick. You must take a deep scan to the memory and have a full battery life to take out the pictures. So, good luck.

    Re: Sony DSC-S500 Cybershot help
I have a Sony Cybershot 7.2 mega pixels. I bought this back in the summer. We do forecloseure cleanouts all over, and travel extensively. We have to take before and after pictures of our work. Just the other day, I was downloading my pics and I noticed when I looked throught them, I got the file error on some of my pics. I cannot afford to do a job 300 miles from home, and get back and have lost some of my pics. They are crucial to us getting paid. I have to have exact pics....the house number, street sign...etc.

What can I do to fix this. I bought the camera and the 2GB Memory Stick Pro Duo that the camera requires at Circuit City. I cant put my hands on my instruction booklet at this time. Not sure where I laid it down. I will find it, I'm sure, but we go out on another job on Tuesday....I need this fixed!

I just downloaded over 400 pics to my company, but when I went back to search for a certain pic, it was gone, and the file error was in its place. Thank GOD I was able to send them all before that error happened.

HELP! I have been so pleased with this camera until now. Now I am really gun shy of it. I need a camera that will NOT let me down.

Thank you if anyone can help me.
