    NEX firmware for A-mount autofocus...

Sony has announced a firmware update that will allow the a-mount lenses to AF with the adapter. Same for the E-mount camcoeder (VG10) in November.

"Available from mid-October, a firmware update adds fresh functionality to the NEX-5/NEX-3. Autofocus operation is now supported when using A-mount SAM and SSM lenses with the optional LA-EA1 Mount Adaptor (upgrade for NEX-VG10 is available from mid-November). There's also a new custom function that allows assignment to buttons of frequently-used functions, plus a new function to record movies with setup aperture."

Re: NEX firmware for A-mount autofocus...

I cannot lay claim to having much interest in this design. I like seeing what I am shooting through the lens, optically. I have used the idea of live view through my a850 by incorporating a USB webcam with the a850's remote control aspect.

Using an FS-1100 adapter, I get the convenience of using the "hot shoe" as an anchor. The flash aspect of the hotshoe has nothing to do with powering the WebCAM ... that is provided by the USB connection. On the A700, if you need a flash using this device, you would use something that would make use of the pc-sync port, such as a ring flash on the lens.

I admit, this is handy when you simply cannot be behind the camera ... and, in fact, I can be 150' away using this device.

And if you add USB controllable pan/tilt tripod head tot he mix ... you get something quite cool.

Unfortunately, NEX does not have remote control ... so ... why bother? Had they built that small aspect into it, that would have been the tie-breaker.

Sure there are a multitude of uses, but I am wondering ... how is it that I cannot find many that would apply to my current situation? To me, the NEX is like a half solution without a question ...

    I'm just sayin'

If you can't afford the heavy-duty gear ... have no fear, they used to do this with a piece of charcoal and a dark tent
There's no money in this ... it's just "love of the game."
Look, I did not create the optical laws of the Universe ... I simply learned to deal with them.

Remember: It is usually the GLASS, not the camera, that gives you the most improvement in your photography. Refrain from "INTRO" lenses.

The NEX is about 1/100th the size of all of that.

The NEX seems to have two current uses:

    - Small, light, high IQ P&S with interchangable lenses.

    - Mount for exotic non-standard lenses with an adapter.

Same reasons I use the E-P1 and GH-1 myself, probably why Sony went down that route.

I'm REALLY interested in the NEX-5. Surprised more people on these forums don't have them, honestly.
