    Ralph Eugene Meatyard

I love this guy's name. Meatyard. Good thing he was a photographer and not a serial killer.

I went to see a rather extensive show of his work at ICP on Friday. It was after work and I was rather tired.... and had to meet friends afterwards so I didn't get to stand an take it all in as attentively and slowly as I would have liked. The photographs were all the same size - ummm, all in 11x17 frames if I remember correctly. I noted this because it made it easier to concentrate on the content - you could go frame to frame without alternating between standing back and going up close. You were almost intimately engaged with each image. The work was sectioned off - the series he did with masks, the rare self portraits, the series of his family in abandoned mansions in the areas near his home. Grotesque and weird at times, other times hilarious but poignant. A real black and white treat.
