    Mystery On The Streets

Had just finished drinking my pint in a Welsh pub and took this on the way out (out of the pub that is ). Had to photoshop a lot out of this one; road markings etc.

Converted to B/W from a colour original. Hope you like it but as usual Criticisms good or bad welcome.

    Many Thanks

I like the contrast in the photo, but I think the window frame is too distracting. I think I understand what you were trying to achieve, but for me, it doesn't quite make it.

    Thanks for posting,

    Hi,
I like the idea of using the windows as a frame. However, I find the background is a bit soft. The whole image seems bland to me. I would suggest to capture something interesting in the background.
    All the best.

    hey
there may be too much contrast for this shot to work. I do like the idea though..

I like what you've done I just don't feel there's any mystery about it.
Perhaps if it was foggy or a lone figure throwing a furtive glance over his/her shoulder.

Interesting shot. I don't mind the window frame, as it adds that look I believe you were going for. The only thing I'm not liking is the lighting difference of the street, how right outside the window it's a gray, but then the shadow of the building makes it almost a black. The change, atleast for me, is to drastic and makes the lighter part of the road almost look like a ledge from the window.

Just a thought, but I still love the idea,

    Jared

    Re: Mystery On The Streets

I also think that the contrast of this scene is too strong because of the strong shadows cast by the houses in the street. This would be a neat shot had it been taken with an overcast sky and a flater light.

I would have also used a different composition in this shot. In particular, I am distracted by the fact that the window frame merges with the window and door of the white house. I would have tried to minimize the merging lines. For instance, the top right window pannel should have included the whole window + sign + roof line of the white house, while the bottom right window pannel should have included the whole shop window of the white house (see sketch).

On the plus side, I think your BW conversion is really good and your framing goes very well with this picture as it strengthen the window idea.

    Cheers,

    Steph.

    Thanks to you all.

You have a keen eye and if I had the chance to retake this I would endeavour to compose it as you suggest. The center bar of the window blocks out the shops title which is 'Murder and Mayhem' and that is a big mistake.
The mystery bit to me is the painting of the dark man in the entrance to the shop and this shows better at 100%.
The window frame in my opinion has to stay and I'm only sorry that I did not include it in its entirety, especially the right hand frame.
    Very constructive and helpful replies.
    Thanks Again

Where is Wales is the Pub?

I agree with all the comments so far.

There is a silohuet of what looks like a greyhound pulling a trolley - what is it?

    Hello Roger
The pub is in Hay & Wye where they have the book festival. The dog and trolley, and the man in the doorway are paintings on the walls. They for me are the mysteries and look a lot better and dramatic on the full version.

    Re: Mystery On The Streets

The window pain is a great ideal for this shot. It did not distract me at all. Funny thing for me, I looked straight at the greyhound. The mystery for me though was trying to decide if it was a shadow or painted on the wall or something else. It would have been nice to see some patrons on the street.

I look forward to seeing more photos from your home-and the land of my ancestors.

Tom, I too like the idea here and feel it is good, but could have been better. Stephs suggestion on the composition in moving the frame just out of the way of the outside interests would have worked better. I like the strong contrast here, though. You have a good reason to go back for another pint ;) not that one needs a reason.
