Taking photos of stars - Settings?

What mode and or settings would I set my Canon EOS Rebel on to take photos of stars at night from a tripod?

Manual, f/8 or f/11, shutter on bulb open for several seconds at a time, experiment. Oh yeah, sturdy tripod and a remote will be necessary to prevent shake.

How to tell the most experienced shooter in a group? They have the least amount of toys on them.

    Experiment shooting stars

set your camera to manual/bulb (b) place your camera on a sturdy tripod and use a remote switch w/ lock and hold open for 1 hr. to several hrs. then get ready for the magic. Erik
