D800 new firmware release

Nikon France wrote to me to say there's a new firmware release for my D800. I've had a look at it. Seems to be minor bugfixes and the ability to support CF cards bigger than 128GB

New guy here, so sorry if this question is basic..

Do firmware releases happen often, and is it best to update often, or is it really only required if you have issues? I am an IT guy and understand the fundamentals of firmware, but I don't go upgrading my motherboard (and it is recommended not to if you don't have issues) every time there is a new release.

Firmware updates don't happen that often. When a firmware update for a specific camera is made available it will state what issue or bug it has addressed. It is then up to you to decide whether or not you wish to download it.
