    D7100 Price ?

Please do not faint seeing a post from me. Photography has just had to take a back seat for too long for me but I'm hoping to be getting back in soon.
I came across something about the D7100 and still had enough curiosity to start looking. I've read several of the posts here that mention it and read PJ's review and others.

Mind you, I'm not complaining, but why is it available at such a low price? My D80 was/is great and I avoided all the D90 and D300s upgrades but remember them as being over 2 grand and this camera is new at about 1200. Have camera prices been coming down that much or what?

I don't believe that the d7100 is a d300 upgrade. The d7100 is a d7000 upgrade. I think later this year or early next year Nikon will announce the d400 and it will in all likelihood be priced around the same price as the d300 when it was released, around $1700.00, give or take a few dollars.

    Re: D7100 Price ?

    Welcome back!

The D7100 is the direct descendant of your D80 (reasonably priced amateur expert DSLR). However it betters the D300 in almost every way, one notable exception being the ability to do long bursts of RAW (it stalls after only three shots).

The D300 (low end pro) has been replaced by the D800 which is much more expensive because it's FX format.

Between the two there is the D600 (expensive FX format amateur expert DSLR). And - probably - a new DX format DSLR.

I have the D800 with D300 as second body. I'm planning on replacing the D300 with the D7100 sometime next year. It looks really good.

Excellent tool. Very versatile. I use it for just about everything except tasks where I can't carry around a large amount of gear + lenses.

    Re: D7100 Price ?

I managed to get a D7100 body + 18-105 lens this morning for 1039 Euros. Thats a good deal for something that will be a second body, replacing my D300.

I was very happy with my D300 until I did some large A3 size prints from shots I had done this summer at 3200 ISO at the same time as some shots with the D800 at the same ISO. Great disapointment. The D800 prints looked wonderful while the D300 ones looked - dull and noisy. And I did have several goes at them.

I've almost got the user interface figured out. Someone with a D90 had to tell me how to change the ISO.

Looking forward to hearing how you like the d7100 and the 18-105 lens Charles.

Still think that Nikon will announce a d400 soon :-)

    Re: D7100 Price ?

The 18-105 went straight on the D300. I will probably give away the D300 to a deserving person and I have to have a lens to put on it. I figure it cost me 130 Euros.

The D7100 is a platform for the 18-200. This is my worst lens but it's also the most versatile. When I take the D7100 that's what I need.

I upgraded my D7000 with the D7100 and the most notable improvement is the speed of auto focus, I used to miss alot of pictures on the D7000 because of focus issues

    Re: D7100 Price ?

Thanks usuusu; I'm just wrapping up a two-week tour of Morocco with my D90, exclusively with the 18-200. It (the D90) has served me very well but I lost way too many shots to auto-focus problems (I suspect exacerbated by grit / sand slowing the motor). For that alone I would upgrade before my next big trip (but better high-ISO and other improvements will be nice as well!). But that won't be for quite a while so we'll see what Nikon has brought out by then :-)

    Re: D7100 Price ?

I've been using the 18-200 with my D7100 and so far I haven't had any autofocus issues. Focussing was just where I wanted it. The extra resolution of the D7100 boosts the level of detail provided by the 18-200. You always want it to be a bit sharper, but there's lots of detail there.

Remember that the D90 has the 11-point autofocus unit that was released with the D200 while the D7100 is two generations on with the 51-point autofocus unit from the D800. They've made some progress...

Yes, exactly - I should have been clear I meant upgrading the body, not the lens. I'd keep the 18-200, 7100 body should be a big improvement on autofocus as well as high ISO performance, from what I've read. But as I'm a binge photographer (day job keeps me way too busy to shoot most of the year), that will wait for my next big trip.

By the way I seem to have lost ability to post attachments here, but you can see a couple of quick takes from Morocco over at 500px: 500px / Steve Blough / Photos

OK saw that, nice stuff. But the one of the baloon at Bled castle caught my eye. Is it my imagination or is the cliff face bottom right slightly unsharp? With the 18-200 at 170mm f5.6 its the sort of thing that can happen with mine (I try to shoot at f11 beyond 100mm). It doesn't matter in this image as the interest is all in the center.

I did these two at a medieval fair this morning. D7100 + 18-200, natural light, just saw the image as I walked by.

I'm coming to realise that if you want really nice results from the D7100 then its like with the D800 - you have to take your time and do it carefully. Those leaves are just beautifully rendered.

    Both shots 28mm, 400 ISO, 1/250s f8 or thereabouts

Thanks, that shot is from last year's trip. I went back to the original and can't see any differential lack of sharpness on the bottom right cliff face, I think the color / texture of the rocks is just varying. But certainly seen examples where the 18-200 appeared to have problems in the corners.

    Re: D7100 Price ?

The water on the leaves looks remarkably real (on the original). Apologies to Mr. Blough about the rock face, the 18-200 makes me paranoid about detail. All of my other lenses I can use them at any aperture and focal length and the result will be "good enough".

So for Christmas - I'm saving my pennies for a 18-140 VR. Perhaps. The first tests look encouraging and DXOMark rates it pretty highly.

    Re: D7100 Price ?

No reason for an apology - I appreciate the reminder of the 18-200 sharpness issues and desirability of keeping it stopped down a bit. But realistically for me, for the kind of travel where I have no idea how the next shot is going to line up the ability to go with a single lens outweighs the downside - until there's a better one with the same reach, I'll live with some edge issues.

One story from the Morocco trip - I was with a number of other amateur photogs (it was a National Geographic "photo adventure"). One lady had a brand new D600 and couldn't understand why her photos weren't showing what was in the viewfinder. Turns out at the last minute she had followed someone's advice to take the 18-200 as a great travel lens ... and no one explained the difference between FX and DX. I doubt that little oasis in the desert had seen too many seminars on sensor size and crop factors before.

    Re: D7100 Price ?

I've used the 18-200 on the D800 sometimes. I guess she didn't notice how the edges of the frame went dark. It still takes some concentration.

Which reminds me - the D7100 also has a crop mode. The 18-140 becomes a 23-180 gosh that's almost an 18-200 but so what I can just crop the full image. Well it could be useful to get round the D7100's great weakness - the size of the internal buffer.

    - Put my D7100 on high-speed continuous shooting (of 14-bit RAW) and it does 5 shots then stalls for an instant
    - With 12-bit RAW it gets up to 8 shots
    - With normal JPG it gets up to at least 20 (I gave up)

The internal buffer is rather small. Not the ideal sports camera. But if you switch to 1.3 crop then the number of continuous 14-bit RAW shots goes up from 5 to 8.
