    Sunset on the Volga

    Hi all

This was taken on the River Volga at sunset from the boat we were on. I have no idea who the people were, but I thought they were compositionally necessary.

    Cheers

Nothing to critique Mike. I think it's fine.

Very nice sir Mike! But if I were to shoot this I would prefer the foreground to be silhouette.

Composition-wise, as is, I find it right-side heavy. I would prefer the sun more on the left side of the photo to balance things out.

Right place. Right time. Good composition. Great result. I think that, with this angle of view, putting the foreground into deep silhouette would have left too much of the image a solid black mass. For me, the "near silhouette" works better.

    Re: Sunset on the Volga

Thanks again guys for looking. Re the silhouette, with such a large area in shadow, a pure silhouette would indeed be too much. I think that retaining some detail is important and, in that, I agree wholly with nikon 19804. Re the crop, I can see where AgingEyes is coming from - I could easily crop it on the left, about where the vertical railing post is. I will have a look at that.

    Cheers

The only things I would consider with this photograph Mike, would be to get rid of the vertical post that supports the canopy ( I don't think it would be missed) and see then what it looks like. Also, if the info is there in the RAW file, to try and get a little more detail around the lower leg an feet area where they almost blend in with the deck.

    Re: Sunset on the Volga

Thanks Tom for the idea about the vertical post .. it's a good one. I have done exactly this as per your suggestion, and also shaved a little off the left as per AgingEyes thoughts. It could also perhaps now use just a shave off the top - but I haven't bothered with that here.

    Cheers
