Canon Macro EF 100mm 2.8L IS

Hi everyone, thought it was time for another one of these. I rented this lens for the month and I know a lot of members have one so I thought a thread would be fun.

I haven't gotten to go out yet but I was so excited about getting the lens I messed around a little with my pool table and some of my kids toys.

Re: Looking for Inspiration - Part 5 - Just the Canon 100mm 2.8L

Great start! I like the pool ball the best. The DOF is SUPER shallow with this lens.

Here are some of my shots with this lens; I've posted most of them in other threads:

Good idea, Bert. Love that first tied fly shot, spiraleyes.

I'm still learning to use this lens (yeah, that DOF is a challenge), but here are a few recent shots. The first is a heavily processed tulip and the last is an Azalia. Not sure what the budding plant is, but thought it looked cool at the time!

Awesome shots Ken and Spiral. Yeah the DOF on this lens is insanely sharp especially wide open. I think I went all the way to F20 to get that Hot Wheels shot and it's still pretty shallow, lol.

The focus is really tricky handheld too, you cant screw around can you? You gotta get that focus and shoot right away because the slightest movement and you've now screwed up the DOF and your target is no longer in focus. Its been a fun learning experience thus far, here's one of my neighbors flowers I shot today at 2.8. Each bud is no bigger than a pencil eraser so DOF at that distance is maybe 1cm from that close up. Crazy

Re: Looking for Inspiration - Part 5 - Just the Canon 100mm 2.8L

When I first started the "looking for inspiration" threads, I was hoping to inspire (new) people to use their existing (i.e. kit or basic) lenses to go out and be creative with them instead of resorting to buying, or at least wishing for, expensive (i.e. "L") lenses.

But since there is a lack of responses to those threads by the intended viewers, I guess that didn't work.

So I'll play along in this thread. Have some new stuff that I haven't processed yet - will start with those.

Sorry Loupey I didn't know that. I just thought the point was to share photos and hopefully gain some "inspiration" from eachother by seeing what others do with the same equipment.

I wasn't trying to show off my expensive equipment, like I said this is just a rental.

Apologies, I wont start another one of these threads.

I wouldn't apologize. I think that the L threads are equally informative and valid. There's a lot of folks who might be curious about what you get with L lenses.

And the 2.8L is one that can be an entry level L lens. It's expensive but not a bank breaker... and it's awesome (I love my 100 2.8L)

I like to manual focus basically keep working the focus until I hit it and fire immediately. If I wait for af, by the time it locks I've already lost it.

I've been starting to use it with extension tubes. Talk about nice magnification.

    Yeah, please don't apologize, Maplestreet.

It appears that I should, though. I completely spaced that you're looking for images from the 2.8L. My macros were shot with the older, non "L", non IS version.

**Upon further review, I forgot that I didn't even use my macro lens (loaned to a friend) for the tied flies. I was actually using my 50mm 1.4 with a 25mm extension tube (hehe!).

    No need to apologize, Bert!

From the threads generally listed on PR, it seemed that those who felt limited by their equipment needed inspiration to use what they already have. Give a person a 1DsMKIII and an XS - guess which one is going to make him feel inspired by itself?

Regardless of what equipment is being discussed, it is a little disheartening when no new folks are joining the conversation, posting new images, or adding some different viewpoints.
