    Flame-colored Tanager (Costa Rica)

    Here's one from my Costa Rica workshop a few weeks back. What a beautiful species!!

    I'm feeling dumb here. How did you get a 700 mm focal length? I don't get that number with the 1.6 camera crop along with any prime + extender.

    He's not measuring crop factor into this. 500mm + 1.4x extender = 700mm.

    Very nice shot.

    A friend of mine told me that extenders are always soft... So much for that.

    Not always, but my Canon 2x is soft, and the 1.4x isn't.

    I thought the 2x was OK on my 70-200 until I bought a 100-400 and compared the two!
    The 200 end of the 70-200 plus 2x was far softer than the 400 end of the 100-400.
