Why someone told you that is peculiar. It will work very well. Some film-era lights have different voltages, and the sync timings can be a little different, making for some compatibility issues. But, the 580EX II was a digitally intended flash, and it will work perfectly fine with the 450D.

On another note regarding the light - I find automatic control of the flash to give me more controllable results. The questionable accuracy and variability of TTL flash metering, to me, makes manually controlling a flash much easier. I only ever use flash in full manual mode, and I'd advise that as well.

The only problem I've had was with the fitting to the camera.
The rubber at the base of the foot is shaped for the newer 1D bodies, and so it doesn't totally water seal on older bodies - a minor issue.

The new push & turn locking is better than the old screw method because it takes less of a turn, you can lock/release the flash one-handed.
And the battery door opens far more easily - the 580EXII is all round a better design.

Paul is referring to the rubber boot that fits over the hotshoe. Don't worry about it - if it's a Canon camera and has a hotshoe, the 580EX II will more than likely work with it.

I've used the 580EX II on much older cameras (10D and 30D bodies) and even on my G9 compact (which looks hilarious with such a large strobe - but works great).

You need more power? What exposure settings are you using?
What type of scene are you trying to light?
    Can you post an example?

What do you mean by "extend the flash coverage"? Do you want to light a wider area or do you want to light farther subjects?
