File size on D300

I just got a d300s, I installed and reformatted my 8gb mem card and noticed that with my currents settings; quality fine and size large it will hold about 715 pics. I thought that was weird because that same card with the same size options on my d90 holds slightly over 1000 pics. Why would the d300 hold less with the same settings?

It's only an estimate. The number of pictures you really get is more.

Both are listed as 4288 x2848 pxl at large so something is wrong either the card or the formatting routine.

hmm ...
i also use 8gb cards on my D300
it tells i can fit slightly under 300 when using raw, even less if using raw+jpg
or
thousands if using jpg fine, sorry can't remember exactly how many

700 is an odd number , what's the quality setting that you are using?

I use 8GB cards on my D300 too. I tried all the settings. I go from 300+ for RAW+JPG to 1100+ for JPG fine. Nothing approaching 700.

I have the A700, which uses the same sensor, very close resolution (4282x2878), I use 4's and a few 2's. My camera says 356 for extra fine jpegs on a 4GB card, which seems to coincide with your 8GB reading 715 (actually 3 off). Maybe the D90's extra fine has more compression than the D300's version of extra fine. Is there a discrepancy with Raw as well?.
