A Little Surf

On vacation in Costa Rica and was able to get some surf pics. Any C&C is appreciated.

Exposure on the first looks spot on, the others though look a little dark.
Were you shooting auto exposure, not manual?
Or did the light change on you while you were there?

I was shooting manual.

You were right that things kept changing. The clouds were blowing in and out all day. I didn't always keep up with the changes.

I tried rolling the shutter speeds up and down to keep it properly exposed but a lot of times they started in the sun and ended up in the shade.

Aperture Priority would probably have been a better choice.

I like them all. I really love the last one but wish it was lighter. It's so tough to get these shots under those conditions. The surfer in the 3rd one looks a bit soft on my laptop, but the composition is excellent. Love them. I miss Costa Rica! Lived there for 3 years. Where were these shots taken?

BTW , you may want to experiment with spot metering on the shots like that last one. They frequently turn out ok.

These were taken at Playa Langosta near Tamarindo.

Spot metering helps if your subject is on the spot, does spot metering follow the AF point?
I'm not sure about how it works on the 50D.

Are you using the * button for AF, or the shutter release?
Just curious, because I changed over to a dedicated AF button a couple of years ago.

Did you shoot in RAW to give yourself more latitude for correction afterwards?
I always do, unless I need quick results and have to shoot in JPG.
Even then I'll usually use JPG+RAW so I have the best of both worlds.

I use the AF button or the * button. I should update my signature because I have a 1D mkII and a 7D now.

I did shoot in raw. I will try and re-edit when I get home and on the big monitor. I will try shooting jpeg and raw to see my results.
