    Stitch in time

I was about to toss this old sewing machine into the scrap metal bin at work but I noticed the pattern on the front and thought it might have possibilities. I'm wondering if this is a bit tight, or perhaps not nearly tight enough ?

    Re: Stitch in time

I think it works as is, and really like the sepia tone

Edit: Actually this image brought back childhood memories.. my Mom had a sewing machine, very similar to this, without the engraving on the side, but all the knobs and wheels were similar, I use to be fascinated watching the belt, the stabbing needle as it went up and down, the thread, and my mom carefully guiding the cloth to be sewed together, hers was mounted on a wooden box and sometimes needed adjusting of the screws underneath or oiling, I was fascinated with the industrial look of the bottom, the sewing of a dress usually ended up in a night out for my parents, where they will dress up and I and my brothers would stay home with my grandma babysitting. phew!
    The power of an image!

    Re: Stitch in time

    I really really like this.

May main critique would be I sort of lose the rest of the machine into the background, but the front pattern pops out nicely

I like it. I find it kind of creepy, but old things do that to me. I generally think the sepia works. It probably does emphasize the oldness. Black and white probably would have been a good choice as well.

I like it a lot. Great subject. Angle of persective is wonderful, it really shows off the ornate front panel. I think I would crop more off of the bottom. The large nut is in competition for attention to that panel. Can you even out the light on the front, maybe subdue it a bit from the bottom? What do you think about clonning out that silver spool holder on the right?
    Real nice capture.
    Please don't throw it away.

    Re: Stitch in time

Armando, Cara, Daq, and NKP68, thanks for your suggestions, much appreciated. My intention was to make the photo look as old as the machine. Bit of a twist as I sometimes have to try and make my wifes old family history phots look like new ( well newer.. )

    Re: Stitch in time

This has a lot of potential Pete, but I do feel that the surroundings and the overall composition need adjustment. I don't like that curtain back there for whatever reason, at least as is (not sure if it will be OK with more or less lighting on it). The bottom part of the machine that contacts the table or floor definitely seems clipped. I also think you could loosen up the sides a little.

What does work though is the interesting low angle you shot it at. I like the lighting but feel that you could better illuminate the middle 'neck' part of the machine. Finally, you have to use a tripod here. It must be sharp and have sufficient DOF to either get the entire device in focus, or to purposely blur the back of it. It seems somewhere in between right now, not sure if the DOF is the culprit or it is simply soft. There's no excuse not to have a shot like this razor sharp, really (unless you don't own a tripod).
