Contrast and detail looks great. Unique subject.

If I were going to suggest anything, I might try it with a tighter crop. The most intersting stuff are the meters and valves. Maybe crop it tighter within the main lines so you can focus more on the actual equipment.

Really, really nice b/w processing. How did you do it?

Love the composition, too. Very nice work.

    Terrific detail !

Interesting how a subject that otherwise will be ignored can become an item of discussion when presented in a well executed photograph

perhaps only crop a part of the left

    Thank you all.
Draymorton, it's pretty much right out of the box. PP consisted of: crop,
but I can see now not quite enough, lighten, darken, contrast control and a bit of unsharp mask. I'm going to be a little more agressive with the crop.

Cropped quite a bit left and top. My jury is still out. How's it look to you?

Looks a bit tight at the top now, I prefer your original shot.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...

Hmm, I'm going to have to go against the grain here, as I don't like the shot. It seems like it has too many elements and that they don't really stand out at all against the background. I also don't like the right side pipes, though the crop is a step in the right direction. It also seems a bit fuzzy to me: did you use a tripod? It would be sharper if you did, and shots like this with a lot of small detail really beg to be razor sharp.

Against the grain opinion is also part of what I look for. Thank you for the clear and detailed critique. This shot was hand held, I don't usually carry my tripod, maybe I should re-think that approach.
    Thanks again,

    Ed

    Re: Black & White Gas

I like shots like this. Normally people do not stop and look at this kind of subject. But, when one does, one can see a new kind of dimension to something so ordinary. Beauty in the mundane as it were. There are a few dark spots in this "sculpture", spots where I would like to see more detail. But that would entail other equipment and this is a spontaneous shot, if I am reading correctly.

I like the original. The cropped version looks... cropped.

I think the cropped version looks better but perhaps cropped too tightly at the top.
