    Butterflies X 3

Took a bunch of butterfly pictures over the week-end and this one just struck me. I know the focus is a little soft as I had the lens wide open (500mm f4), but they are butterflies.

    What do you'all think?

Whoa the image displayed a darker than on my screen originally. Oh well, good other than that?

    Let's try again

I would shoot it with a more normal lens at a closer distance, where you can control the situation a bit better. As is, the blur is probably unacceptable. Not sure if it is caused by camera shake, poor focus or inadequate DOF. Regardless, use a regular zoom lens and you will probably get better results. Not sure the actual bush color is doing anything for your subjects, either, so consider that too.

    Re: Butterflies X 3

Having three butterflies in one shot is rather uncommon so the image is good in that regard.

However, images like these almost always require the subjects to be razor sharp. Not only was your DOF very shallow, but the focus was off (to the rear) and not one of the three butterflies made it inside the DOF.

So if you ask me, I would say try it again.
