Elusive Woodpecker

After chasing this guy around for about two hours, I finally gave up and started the climb to the top of Pompey's Pillar. About two-thirds of the way up, he decides to do some carpentry work in a cottonwood at a near perfect elevation for me to capture a fair image. I believe he is a Downy Woodpecker, but feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

I'm still not good at telling the difference, but judging from the beak size in proportion to his head, I'd say a Hairy and not a Downy.

I'd say this capture is a little bit better than fair. I had no idea there was a Hairy and Downy I just thought I was seeing an adult vs infant. Learn something new everyday on this site, thanks Cara.

Thanks Bob. I am getting an education here as well, I had no idea we even had Hairy Woodpeckers up here!
