[Canyon Hiker]

I shot these about a week. The hole in the sky caught my attention as the sun was setting behind it and the fog was rolling in front of it. I wasn't going to do anything with these when I first looked at them..tonight I looked at them again and I am a little unsure...hmmm.. Any critiques are much appreciated and well listened to. I'll take any help I can get...

Hey Darin, I love the tones that you acheive in your photography (as always)

Out of the bunch here. i think 1 & 3 are the strongest for me. Even with the tree centered #3 is still strong imo.

My nitpick is that maybe you should refresh your subject matter. It seems i've seen these already from you, even though i didn't.

Nice Darin. I like the last two becuase they have retained the mood that to me is very important here. the first two look very processed somehow as if you were trying to bring out the detail aeverywhere, but at the same time we lose the depth and mood that natural dark and light bring to us.
i agree that the centered tree somehow how oddly enough works like that.

Thanks, Liban I agree. Right now there is nothing but snow and white sky's most of the time. Trying to get creative with what I have at the moment I guess.

Thanks Gary. The B&W probably are over processed. I'm stuck in the "try and make old duck look like a young swan" mode until these storms pass.

#3 photo:
I usually try and never center anything in my photos, and try and stick to the thirds. This was a pano where the outside images didn't work., but I liked the colors.

The B/W seem over processed to me as well. I would call them technically good, but to tell you the truth I skipped right over them to #3. I like #3 a lot. Its has an almost dreamy kind of quality surreal quality to it. The colors also seem to work well together which I think is a plus. Did you change the color any or is it natural?

alik thanks, I am just beginning o experiment with B&W. I don't have a set recipe for how I process them yet. I ALWAYS shoot Raw. This leaves a lot of room for correcting problem areas. In general if I am shooting with B&W in mind I will lock the exposure on the snow. This seems to help in keeping the shadows and not over exposing the shot. A overexposed shot is hard to save even Raw. I don't have photoshop, but I do have Corel Panit Shop Pro X2. I rarely use it. I do almost all of my editing in Digital Photo Professional. A free program that came with my Canon. It has the basics, Sat, Hue, Noise removal, wht balance correction, contrast ect. For shot #1 I desaturated and bumped up the contrast as well as a few curves adjustments.

Andrew, Thanks I appreciate the honesty, The colors are all natural. I actually desaturated that one a bit because I shot it in landscape mode, which automatically boost the saturation.
