    Powder Day Crash Sequence

December 31st was an epic powder day here in Salt Lak City. I took my skis and the Canon EOS 7D up to Alta for some, ummm, camera testing. And boy was it a good day. The snow was the best yet this season and I got in a ton of sorely needed ski photography practice. I didn't get any magazine covers but I am really psyched about the sequence below. Besides the fact that it was an awesome yardsale crash, it's a good example of why I bought the 7D. The 8 FPS frame rate allowed me to catch the whole thing and then pick the best shots. These are just a select five of twenty that I thought best represented the crash. Even more important than the frame rate is the auto focus performance. I shot this using the 7D's AI Servo continuous auto focus, which proved to be rock solid for ski photos. Every frame is in focus. That is huge for shooting action like this -especially from a camera that doesn't cost $5000.

Weird - the sequence got out of order when I uploaded those photos. The second one should actually be the first. The rest are all correct.

He still has his skis, poles, goggles, hat, etc... c'mon, that's not a true yard sale! ;)

Oh it does that to me all the time, uploading attachments in sequence never works for me.
Or rather viewing them in the sequence I uploaded them fails.
Whenever people talk about images by position, the first, or top, or bottom - I know that I have about 50% chance of not seeing them in that order.

Thanks for the correction, Wesley. What would the technical term for this crash be? Bombhole?

    Ack! No EXIF!

Great series capture. I think mine are in order (this time - they do change). I always 'attach' if there is an order required or prefered.

You'll almost never find EXIF data with my photos. That's because 99% of the time I use the Photoshop "Save For Web" option to keep the file size down. But if you check my gallery you'll see I've included some of the critical info with the photos

Great series, PJ. I did wonder about the second as it made it look like he was going to recover.

Excellent capture... not too much of a yard sale though

    Re: Powder Day Crash Sequence

i had a bad yard sale today on the slopes (no powder though), i wish someone had been there to film it as good as these.... rode the next lift with a guy who saw it, and i was happy that at least he found it entertaining.

    Awesome sequence.

Good thing they weren't Eastern conditions.

I liked the out of sequence pictures. When I fall, I'm always out of sequence. I'll show you when I visit the end of january.

We need to get some good photos of you this next trip. Start practicing your powder turns!
