    Windows 7 & RAW files

I seem to remember something about Vista being able to display RAW images as picture thumbnails in folders like Mac OS X. I was still on a Mac at the time so I never really tested it. However, I have recently switched to Windows 7 on a new machine I built and it doesn't display the RAW files as thumbnails like I am used to. I am having to use bridge just to view and move these files around. I may be a bit spoiled coming from Mac, but I am wondering if there is something I have missed, a setting or what not, or maybe a download I can get to make this possible?

    Thanks!

I cannot answer for W7 as I'm still using XP, but Windows (and I doubt the Mac) will not render and display the RAW image. It will display the jpg that is generally imbedded in the RAW file. What software are you using to view them? - TF

I'm still using XP but there is a "power toy" for it which will display the raw images when you right click use the drop down to say open with windows raw image viewer.
I suppose they have it for Win7 too.
I use it to preview the shots before editing.

Windows 7 and XP will not natively display RAW files, unless the camera uses TIFF files as it's raw format.

There are allot of "power toys" add in program for viewing raw images. I use a photo data base "Thumbs Plus" with the Digicam Plugin and I can view the RAW files and edit them and save them as anything but RAW files. You can try the program for 30 days before it stops working.

Windows 7, and Vista should be able to display the JPEG and RAW files natively for most camera's by installing the drivers that came with the camera on the CD. The CODEC should be installed from there or go to the Canon, Nikkon, Sony... website to down load them.

I'm wondering why you're shooting RAW. RAW is great if you're doing serious post processing, but if it's simple archiving and printing, with marginal photo manipulation, RAW is a bit of overkill.

Re: Windows 7 & RAW files

But you never know what you'll do in future.
I decided early on to shoot everything in raw, because one day I'd learn enough about PS
Then along came Lightroom and I can now do lots of basic adjustments easily.
Even on my images from years ago, because I thought ahead.
Yes, it uses more disk space.
But for me that's the only drawback.

I'm not the kind of person who wants instant prints direct off the memory card.
If I did, I would shoot JPG+RAW to get the benefit of instant print from the JPG and better manipulation of the RAW.
