The last couple of days I have been on the hunt for small seasonal streams in the area. I ran across these two yesterday. Your critiques are always appreciated.
Thanks

ok guys..You have responded to my 6th picture of this series but none of the first five here. Now I'm really curious as to why..I thought some of these were much better than the "ok one more" thread.. Ok I guess I'm just bumping this thread..are they that bad?? I like critiques that say "you should do this" more than critiques that say "nice job".
So let me have it!! Every word of advice or ideas I recieve here is what makes this such a excellent board

The first few need a little more depth, maybe if you darken the shadows in the back slightly? The fourth one I wish the center were sharper, love the look of it, but thats just bugging me and again with the deeper shadows toward the back - it would just give it a little more depth and draw you deeper into the photo. Lovely scenery!
IMO this series seem to have lots of dead and dying plant matter and this makes them look kind of depressing .None have some aspect which grabbed my interest, unlike the previous series.

Isn't it a cool thing in nature that the colours never seem to clash...
Number 1 and 3 for me -- especially #1. Love the rock steps down to the water -- I'd be kicking off my shoes. I see #2 is a closer version of #3, but I prefer the composition and color of #3 way more -- it's the rocks that make the difference. #4 is my next favorite -- the clumps of grasses are have interesting color and texture. #5 is my least favorite because nothing really grabs my attention -- it doesn't have the bold elements that the others do.

Well that sums it up..Looks like I will be pushing these to the back of the HD. The only one I thought might stand a chance was the #4. The clumps of grass I thought was interesting, but the rest of the picture just didn't do anything for me. I'm glad were all on the same page with these:smilewinkgrin:
Thanks again everyone..Every single one of your comments and critiques I learn from and really appreciate, and I thank you all for that x10. If there bad, tell me. I will never take it the wrong way..I just want to learn and advance in what has become my passion....Landscape photography:thumbsup:
Thanks again!!

NOTE - adjusted this post since I had missed the third one

Ok, here goes (from the top):
# 1 has a lot of things happenin in the shot. I'm neutral on that, but I think the main issue here is the water the blades of grass and twigs block our view of the water and make the image look untidy. I also seems a tad dark on my monitor here, but it has never been calibrated either.
# 2 is probably the weakest of the shots. There's nothing special about the angle or subject other than a river -- perhaps the rushing water made the scene more attractive in real life? This often happens in places like this. The water the fallen tree cuts across there and blocks our view is not the best ... but I think it might be very plain w/o the tree, so the image is hurt either way.
# 3 looks OK. Nice color in the foreground. Feels like one's rolling downhill.
# 4 is the best IMO. I like the colors and shape of the little bunches of Earth and grass in the foreground. They sort of look like camels I also pretty much like their placement in the frame, filling up the scene at very strategic points. The area of the photo that I think is weakest is the center distant area, which sort of fades into a very pedestrian part of the woods (where the river takes a turn). If there were a deer in the water ... (you can see why nature photographers sit in the woods hour upon hour, waiting for their 'prey').
# 5 also misses as far as subject matter. It is also somewhat soft. I don't particularly like the composition but I can't really tell as there is no obvious subject / focal point to form the geometry of the area in my mind.
Anyway -- hope this isn't too harsh. I have found that walking in the woods is great and since I like photography the two go well together. But I've also realized that it's hard to convey the feeling in photos. I guess it's an art !

For me #4 is the best of all, I like the bumps of grass....
Also because you have more visual range. And I think is what is missing in the rest of them. Nature shots(except portraits) should have a wider view spectrum or should cover more terrain in the composition. What I see here are tight views which makes me hunt for a specific subject, this does not happen when I look at a "wider" scene, because the whole scene is the subject itself....hope that was clear.
