Anyone else have this issue with their D3?

I took some shots recently at a mid day football game. At 9fps aperture priority f2.8 iso 200 WB 200, when I shot in bursts of 3 to 5 , I would get some overexposed shots in the middle of the set. Has anyone else seen this? I used the Nikon 70-200 f2.8 VR

Never had that problem with my any DSLR but it sounds like you have bracketing on.

That's a plausible explanation. Check it out and let us know please, jacobovs. What exposure mode were you using? If the light values change drastically in the burst and you're using an auto exposure mode, that could also account for the overexposure.

That's what I thought of as I was writing this question. I quickly went to check before I pressed send...that was not it. I was shooting with 2 D3's one with my 400 f2.8 and the other with the 70-200 f2.8 both wide open. The 400 had no issues ,while the 70-200 had this problem. I did notice that they were set to spot metering, I wonder if that would do it since one team had black uniforms and the other white? Is that possible?

Possible, I had my Canon 70-200 diaphragm fail, under- and over-exposing within a burst. But then I had dropped it in the pit lane on 3 occasions over the past 6 months while changing lenses !
Buying a second body so I didn't change lenses in a hurry didn't cure fumble-fingers, but saved a lot on lens repairs !

Spot meter could definitely do it. I've had very confusing metering results when my camera accidentally got switched to spot meter. What exposure mode? Like I said, if it's an auto exposure mode, that's the likely culprit. A black uniform could make your exposure about two stops too bright.

It was set to aperture priority. I just looked at the data and the blown out ones went from 1/500 to 1/250

99.999% it's the spot metering. Look at where the spot meter is on the different frames and see how the tonal values differ there. That will tell the whole story.

and there's the reason why I never shoot spot metering for sports - those black and white jerseys really throw everything off. I usually shoot scene metering, fwiw.
