Capable wideangle third party for the D700?

I am trying to grab a good wide angle for my d700 and the 12-24 nikon 2.8 is out of my reach at the moment. It is my goal, I'd hate to put something not high quality on my camera, but I need something to tie me over for a couple of months. Any recommendations? I love disgustingly wide. ;) I'd run with any third party.

Sigma's 12-24mm yields great results for a friend of mine.

I have the Tokina 12-24 at f/4 and am more than pleased with it.
    They now have an 11-16 f2.8 http://www.kenrockwell.com/tokina/11-16mm.htm

Hold on. Getting a little lost here:

    - the D700 is a full-frame camera. You can put DX lenses on it but the edge of the frame will be cut at some focal lengths (I think the D700 may even switch into DX mode automatically)
    - the Nikon 12-24 f2.8 doesn't exist. I guess you're talking about the Nikon 12-24 f4, which is a DX lens (see previous)
    - the Nikon 12-24 f4 DX has just been more or less replaced by the Nikon 10-24 f3.5 -f4.5 DX

The Sigma 12-24 f4.5-5.6 looks like a good choice. It's full-frame. However the Nikon 10-24 is cheaper and the Nikon 12-24 is only slightly more expensive now and that doesn't sound like what you're asking for.

I have the (discontinued) Tamron 11-18 f4.5-5.6 DX. It's mostly plastic but it gets the job done and it's much cheaper than the others

Not buying any more gear this year. I hope
