Need help with Cannon EOS XS SLR

Hi everyone, I'm hoping you can help. I was recently taking pictures in AF mode when all of the sudden the camera stopped working. It will still take pictures in MF mode but will not shoot at all in AF. I have tried, re-setting the AF settings, taking off the lens and putting it back on but no luck. However, when I change to 300mm lens the camera works fine in AF. Is there a problem with my other lens?

Welcome to the Forum. Is the camera locking it's focus on something? If you are using AF and the camera cannot lock focus, it will not take an image. Is there a little green dot flashing in the viewfinder? If so, it means the camera wasn't able to lock focus.

What lens are you having trouble with? Is it the 18-55mm IS kit lens? I've had a similar problem with mine. I haven't come up with a reliable solution for the problem and have been thinking I need to send the lens in for repair. I'm not sure it would even be worth the cost, though. That lens is so cheap.

I have had some luck switching it to manual, refocusing it, and then switching it back to auto. I hardly ever use that lens but I just put it on my camera to check it out. It didn't work at first so I swicthed it to manual focus. The focus ring felt "gritty" when I turned it. Does your's feel like that in manual focus? Anyway, it still didn't work after I swicthed back to auto. I tried it again and on the second try, when I switched back to auto it worked.

Obviously, if you have to go through this process to get it to work, and the focus ring feels nasty, something is wrong. But like I said, it's a really cheap lens and might not be worth the cost of the repair. If this the lens you're having problems with, maybe it's time to replace it. It's an ok lens, but you can definitely get a lot better. If it's still under warranty and you're having the same problem I am, send it in.

Try taking a pencil eraser and cleaning the lens contacts.
